5.0 out of 5 stars In Yo Mouth (And Ears), September 9, 2009
By Robert Flippo (Norman, OK) - See all my reviews
So you hold the Deez Nuts debut EP Rep Your Hood in your hands. A few things are probably running through your head like a) they actually named their band Deez Nuts? b) I thought this was a hardcore band, why does the cover look like a rap album? c) what the hell am I about to listen to?

A) Yes, the band's name Deez Nuts is a reference to a Dr. Dre song.

B) Good question. I'm not really sure.

C) Everything awesome.

Deez Nuts formed in 2007 out of the ashes of the Australian outfit I Killed The Prom Queen. JJ Peters, drummer for I Killed The Prom Queen, began Deez Nuts and subsequently recorded the Rep Your Hood EP. With no other permanent member yet, Peters played all of the instruments himself for the recording of the EP.

Some have horribly mislabeled Deez Nuts as "rapcore" or "gangstacore," which is unfortunate because those terms bring to mind such mediocre bands as Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. While a lot of the lyrics and imagery of Deez Nuts pulls from gangsta rap (they're named after a Dr. Dre song for the love of God), the music is straight up hardcore.

They achieve a sound somewhere along the lines of tough guy/New York hardcore with elements of bands like Casey Jones by having a solid blend of driving drums, simple but catchy riffs, and intense vocals with great sing along gang vocals. Every track is an auditory equivalent of downing five Red Bulls in a sitting. Crank this up in your car or on your headphones and you will feel like punching every person that stands in your way, even babies. It's that tough.

Aside from the brutal riffs of Deez Nuts, there is a trademark humor present in Rep Your Hood that assures the EP's place among my pantheon of favorite hardcore albums. The first indication of the band's humor would be the name Deez Nuts. The second would be that their name is Deez Nuts and the first tack is called "In Your Mouth." From there the album goes on to relish in boozing, sex, and partying all while taking pride in friends, family, and the scene. The highlight of the album is probably the song Sex Sells which has the sing along chant, "Dudes love pussy, bitches love dick." With lines like that it is obvious Deez Nuts is all about going out and having a good time rather than taking themselves too seriously.

The album does take a momentary turn towards bitterness with the song "Fair Weather Fans" that bemoans the deterioration of the scene. Anyone who has been a part of a scene for more than the last two years can relate to this song. Going to a show used to be like going and hanging out with one big family. You would see the same people every weekend and there was a camaraderie which seems to be missing from shows today.

Maybe that is why I like this album so much. The gritty, dirty, simple, balls to the wall sound reminds me of going to shows back in 2005 when the Tulsa, Oklahoma scene was alive and kicking. I would recommend this album to any fan of legitimate hardcore.
