Book Description

May 1993
Aimed at the antique-clock collector with a practical bent, this book reflects both the aesthetic and mechanical aspects of horology. The most readily available types of clock are considered in terms of their appearance, construction, value, and how good a buy they may be for the amateur with limited resources. The book then discusses the various tools and materials needed by the clock-repairer. The two principal types of clock - weight-driven and spring-driven - are described, and there are sections on dismantling, cleaning and re-assembling a clock, and on setting it up so that it will function reliably. An alphabetical list of the more common repairs in included.

Donald DeCarle is the most famous of my writers on Watch and Clock repair. His books are easy to understand and with all the illustrations you will have a better chance of repair.

I found this book to be valuable for evaluating old clocks before purchasing. Some can be put in working order rather easily, others require professional care. It pays to be able to know the difference, and it is very useful to learn the names of the basic types of movements and their components.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book for beginners, January 9, 2005
I rather enjoyed the book and the writing style of the author. I'm an amateur clockmaker but intend to pursue the subject through multiple means of training - many books, DVD courses and of course a lot of practical experience.

Would strongly recommend that anyone considering this field also join a professional organization right off the bat. The American Watchmakers Clockmakers Institute (AWI) is great. NAWCC is also one that comes highly recommended.
