Book Description

January 17, 2002
Learn how to rescue, repair and restore old components - the knowledge you need to keep a restored car on the road, or to undertake a full rebuild. Unlike with modern cars, classic car hobbyists cannot simply throw away and replace parts when they break. This book will show you basic workshop techniques, such as welding, grinding, riveting and soldering.

You will also learn how to adapt new parts to fit old components, and perform repairs on door locks, fuel pumps, distributors, speedometers, and many other complex parts of your collector car. The authors tell you what jobs can be done with basic hand tools, what specialized equipment might be needed, and which jobs need to be sent out to a professional.

2.0 out of 5 stars I'm so disappointed!, November 27, 2002

This review is from: Repairing and Restoring Classic Car Components (Hardcover)
I bought this book thinking it would be a _general_ guide to the restoration of classic car components. But when I received it I discovered that (other than a brief chapter on shop tools and methods) it only covers the restoration of very specific items... and unless you are restoring THAT SU carb or THAT Motorcraft distributor or THAT whatever, the book is pretty useless. And on top of that, the book focuses on BRITISH stuff. I'm a Ford Model A fanatic and was really disappointed to find that this book was of no use to me at all. Save your money, guys...

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for British Car Restoration, July 23, 2004

This review is from: Repairing and Restoring Classic Car Components (Hardcover)
I purchased this book based on the glowing review in Antique Automobile (AACA, Mar-Apr 2004) and have not been disappointed. If you are restoring a British car this book will give you insightful, solid how-to information, especially relevant to postwar cars through the 60's. Specific information given on Lucas, Smiths, Weber, Stromberg, Zenith, Wilmot-Breeden, and other classic British component bits, and much of the information is generalizable to other manufacturer components, especially regarding restoration technique. Well-illustrated and well-written -- I wish more automotive books were this well done. The Wallages clearly know what they are talking about and their tips are invaluable to "proper" restoration. Very useful book, indeed.
