Format: Paperback
For a small book, this is perhaps the most comprehensive and authoritative coverage on the subject. Formerly called "Repentance: and the 20th Century Man" this book truly brings light to a doctrine that has been largely ignored since the times of the Puritans and practically scratched from the Gospel of modern churches saturated with "easy-believism" teaching. You cannot be saved without first repenting. And after repenting unto salvation, you must continue to repent still of every sin thereafter. Miller biblically explains and defends these statement and much more about the doctrine.

He also touches on penance found in the evangelical. Penance is not only practiced by Catholics. Evangelicals are just as guilty of trying to pay for their sins through their good works. Check it out in the book. Read it and see if your conscience is not seared.

It's a short, easy read taken from notes that Miller put together over his years as a pastor. It's easy to understand but not pithy; and full of rich truths to meditate on.

May the Lord use this book for a great revival in His church. Would all that hear, repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand!

I picked up a new copy from an Amazon reseller this past week for less than $1 and read it about two days. It is not long or complex, but it is outstanding for its explanation of the importance of a right understanding of true repentance.

The doctrine of repentance today is sadly either ignored and neglected, or wrongly thought and taught even within the church. Yet without a right understanding of what true, Biblical repentance really is and how God uses it to draw people to Himself, many people are left with a superficial assurance of a salvation they do not have. Without God granting true repentance to our deceitfully wicked hearts, there is no true saving faith in Christ, no matter how we (or other people) try to convince ourselves that there may be. As Paul Washer says, "If you don't have a new relationship with your sin, you don't have a new relationship with God."

Jack Miller discusses many of the common misconceptions and wrong influences that effect our understanding of the teachings, work, and person of Jesus Christ and what was accomplished on the cross. He discusses the deceptive teaching of the "carnal Christian", the difference between penance and repentance, and the need of ongoing repentance in the lives of believers.

His discussion of repentance as contrasted with penance (and the confusion for many between the two) was very effective and enlightening. I don't think I've read or heard anyone else distinguish between these two concepts as simply and directly as the author does here. And although it was presented in a simple and straight-forward manner, it was still quite profound.

This is a great little book - little but very powerful in its contents. As the author brings out, repentance is the bedrock or the foundation of Christianity. He tells how this works out in daily life and shares his own personal testimony of how vital it is to keep our hearts humble by God's grace. Very often we hear we need to repent of our sins when we first come to Christ but John Miller makes it clear that repentance must be a way of life - everyday! This is one of the best books I have read on repentance and I have recommended it to many others.

This is an excellent book written in manuscript form by Jack Miller in 1973 as a personal reminder to continually pursue humility in repentance before God. A decade later he and his son Paul would found World Harvest Mission and the Sonship discipleship material that continues to emphasize this theme of daily returning to the gospel and gaining strength through Christ's free gift of his own righteousness rather than through an highly inflated and false view of our own self-righteousness. It was interesting to see these ideas being fleshed out in such a raw way while at the same time I found it convicting, challenging, and truly encouraging. I've never seen so clearly how intertwined humility and true repentance are and how fundamentally opposed my own pride is to repentance. Highly recommended!
