This is the only thorough-going work on repentance I have found. And thorough it is, being used by several seminaries. The fact that it is published by the highly reputable Crossway Books speaks of its integrity, and I can personally speak of its breadth and depth. Although the subject of repentance is discussed quite a lot, somehow, I just did not connect. I read some of the book, but, I feel no clear definition of repentance was given. Perhaps it was the writing style. I don't know...

This is the only thorough-going work on repentance I have found. And thorough it is, being used by several seminaries. The fact that it is published by the highly reputable Crossway Books speaks of its integrity, and I can personally speak of its breadth and depth. A warning: this is not an easy book to read because it exposes personal areas that need to be addressed through repentance. It is not a theological abstract. Roberts, in typical fashion, with scholarship and compelling examples and illustrations, thoroughly fleshes out the biblical requirement of repentance and calls the reader to practice it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read on repentance, July 13, 2006
This review is from: Repentance: The First Word of the Gospel (Paperback)
One can go to any of the major Christian bookstores and not find one honest, straightforward book on repentance. This is one from a man who has walked out his repentance for over 50 years. I read through it in a few lengthy and painful evenings and it's time to read it again.

May those who are honestly seeking Jesus find this book helpful. It's much like Brother Roberts' particular style, which tends to be both instructional and convicting.

In short, this is a must read for any serious disciple of Christ.

I've been a Christian for nine years, and have read countless books. By far, this is the BEST book I have read outside of the Bible. In a day and age when the Gospel is being watered down so much, people need to know what it means to REPENT. Without repentance, no one can enter heaven. Regardless of what position they hold in a Church, how long they have been going to Church, or what their father, mother or grandparents did. Each person will stand before God on judgment day, and if one has never repented and believed the gospel they will perish. This book is CHALK FULL of scripture from Genesis to Revelation pleading with men and women to repent. This book is PERFECT for a men's or women's Bible study, I highly recommend it!!! [...]

THis book is fantastic. Our Lord said we must repent, He sent the disciples out in twos to tell us we must repent and Peter said we must repent to be saved. THis book explains why a Christian must be repentant and what it truly means to repent.

I almost never hear the word repentance in sermons or in church. When I do happen to hear it, the meaning seems to just imply "stop." But, the word is much fuller in meaning that just "stop." Based on my own, non-expert Greek study, the two actions associated with repent are to turn, to change one's mind.

I will continue to study, and pray...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!!!, July 2, 2011
This review is from: Repentance: The First Word of the Gospel (Paperback)
One of the first 3 books a new Christian should read. The true meaning of Repentance is not known to most professing Christian today, shocking but true. Can you answer the question "What is Repentance?"

Richard Owen Roberts gives extraordinary detail in exposing Repentance as a totally necessary step in Regeneration. This book will excite even the most well read to the occasional reader, for it is extremely rich, but written with easy understanding.

Some dear friends recommended this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who truly wants to know the truth about repentance and how God truly feels about it. You will be a completly different person when you are done reading this book. I believe that it was inspired by God and that the author was used as a pen to write what God wanted him to write. It is easy to read and understand. It has a lot of scripture reffrence to back up his statements. I am actually starting a book club with a few of my friends to read it together and allow it to convict us and inspire us to change. Thank you for writing this book. It is exactly what I needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Necessary reading for all Christians., December 28, 2009
This review is from: Repentance: The First Word of the Gospel (Paperback)
This book helped revitalize the magnitude and full cooperation of my repentance with God. Not only did it reveal to me areas of my life that needed further repentance but it changed our church.

My complaints are not of its content but of its writing style and structure. For example, rather than referencing verses for the reader to look up if they be in doubt, the author repeats these verses again and again which slows the thought process and, many times, reduces the impact of its point. My hope is that anyone reading this type of book would already know the Word and merely be able to discuss their full import in another book such as this. I also am disinclined to accept arbitrary divisions of Scriptural Doctrine into seven points. The author divides every chapter or point into seven smaller divisions which may not be so found in Scripture.

Yet overall this is a very good book. One can tell that they are reading the words of a devout and godly man. It takes some time to read through, but is well worth the effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Repentance - An Awesome Responsibility and Privilege, August 29, 2009
This review is from: Repentance: The First Word of the Gospel (Paperback)
Richard Owen Roberts' "Repentance" is a must read for all who desire to know God personally, in the way that God desires. Through reading Roberts' book I have come to better understand 'repentance' as the 'gift of God' yet the responsibility of all humanity. Owen's text is not a sit down read through encounter but a book that takes the reader, willing to repent, on a journey to a closer, better relationshiop with God through Christ Jesus our Lord. Thank you Richard Owen Roberts for a job well done.
