So, after a short uses (in my cases, about 4 hours), the belt wears quickly at one spot when the auger drive bail is not pulled.
Another problem is that the auger does not stop effectively. Because the friction at the engine pulley is so great, the belt keeps rolling even when the auger drive tension is released and brake is engaged. This is a safety issue.
In conclusion, don't buy this belt for MTD(Troy-Bilt, etc.)single stage snow thrower. I will check Lowe's if they sell the genuine MTD belt for less than MTD parts online.
The belt is the same shape and size and does fit onto my snowblower. It even made the snowblower work for a little bit. The problem is, that the original belt has some type of cloth outer layer that covers the entirety of the belt. This replacement belt does not have that cloth outer layer, but is instead 100% rubber.
After doing more research, the purpose for that cloth outer layer is to allow the belt to "slip" a little on the pulley for the auger. When you pull back on the handle to engage the auger, a cable pulls a pulley to put tension on this belt allowing the auger to engage. Let go of the lever, and the belt loosens and the auger disengages.
When the belt is missing this cloth outer layer, the rubber grips the pulley and causes a huge amount of friction and heat. Like I mentioned earlier, I was able to plow my driveway twice with this belt and I thought it was working until I noticed a rubber burning smell, and shortly thereafter, the belt snapped.
There might be other snowblowers that use a different system and could use a belt like this, but I can't believe those machines would use the same exact part number. I ended up ordering a different belt made by Pix from Amazon for a couple of bucks more and when it arrived, it did have the cloth outer layer just like the original belt.
So be cautioned. If you are thinking of ordering this belt, look at your original belt, if its 100% rubber with no cloth outer layer, then this will probably work, but if your original belt was like mine and had that cloth outer layer, it was there for a reason, and this belt will NOT work.
This belt is a generic 0.5"X35" V-belt, which one can easily buy an equivalent at any Auto Parts and/or hardware stores. The problem is the generic belt is NOT designed to provide the same longevity when installed in a MTD single stage snow thrower compared to the OEM version. Single stage snow throwers use the belt as a slip clutch & auger brake. Original MTD belts contain a greater fiber content than this belt, and because of that, last MUCH longer. This belt will wear out in hours if you're throwing more than 2-3 inches of snow. If that's all you have to do, it will do the job. When you get into the 6-10" range, the weight works against the belts composite makeup, and deterioration occurs quickly. You start smelling rubber, and you'll need to increase the tension in order to maintain a consistent auger speed.
Bottom Line: Buy a high-quality belt, and you'll avoid replacing more than 1x per season.
As far as belts go, it seems to be well made- just a bit on the heavy side.
