Works fine, but wish camcorder could read it,
By Allen (MI, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: BP-809 BP-819 Replacement Lithium-Ion Battery with Charger for Canon VIXIA HFS10, HFS100, HF20, HF200, HF11, HF10, HF100, HG21, HG20 Camcorder (Electronics)
The battery and charger work fine. I tried the battery with my new Canon Vixia HF200 camcorder. I wish the camcorder knew how much the battery was charged though. When I turn in the camcorder with this replacement battery, it gives me an error message saying it can't communicate with the battery and asks me if I still want to use the battery. I have to tell the camcorder 'yes' before I can get started. For the battery level display, the camcorder shows a red battery symbol, indicating it doesn't know how much power is left. Other than that, it powers the camera very well and should function fine as a backup.

This replacement battery worked fine with my Canon HF100 camcorder. Lasts about an hour (as advertised). However, be aware that the included charger cannot charge the Canon OEM battery that came with the camera, which I had hoped it would. Also, the battery will not charge when in the camera and the AC-DC cord is plugged in. Basically, the only way to charge it is with its included adapter. The adapter is very compact and easy for traveling, so it is not that big a deal, but something to be aware of. Also, this replacement battery does not have the "smart" technology so there is no readout on the camera LCD screen showing how much battery life is left. Overall, you can't beat the price for a backup battery, just be aware of the limitations.

Well we have a choice, pay one fifth the price of an OEM Canon battery and live with a bit of guessing at the remaining charge or pay full price for a Canon 100 percent compatible battery. I have been using both this and Canon batteries on my VIXIA HFS S100 and having good success. Of course Canon has to make life a bit more complex when you turn on the camcorder by telling you that you don't have a compatible battery making you say ok, you would think they are selling ink. Of course charging will require you to remove the battery from the camcorder. You will probably do good with this battery.

The price is right on this battery... but this is one of those you get what you pay for items. I should have read the reviews closer; my mistake.
There are two serious flaws in this battery: 1) the camera cannot detect the charge level of the battery. When you power up the camera with this battery the camera gives a warning whether to proceed or not. If you proceed it work however this gives me very little confidence to use. I fear that the power will simply cut out while recording and render the video file corrupt. Meaning, the camera has no idea when the battery will die (in the middle of a write to the flash drive for example). 2) The charger that comes with it does not work with "real" BP-809 batteries. The charger was one reason I thought to buy this one (hoped to charge separate battery while using another etc). However, this charger seems specially built for this cheap battery and cannot be used to charge the original. Meaning, you cannot toggle between batteries. All in all a bad choice.

The charger has a green LED on its shell and it is always green with battery mounted. I guess that means the battery is charged to full, but actually the battery is almost empty. I have to bought another charger to charge the battery.

I took this battery with me on a trip to Thailand last month.
I only used it a few times because I recharged the main battery every night. This is great for an emergency backup battery which is what I used it for when I was out somewhere without access to power on extended use of the HF200. This battery does NOT allow the camera to see how much power is left, (it only comes with two prongs instead of the four necessary to communicate with the camera, so it only supplies power, NOT information) so you use this battery only as a backup as you will not be able to tell how much juice is left in it. But for $20 who's complaining, at least I didn't have to fork over the exorbitant amount of money for a second Canon battery! Definitely worth the $20 for the emergency extra battery in the field. I highly recommend it.

This item came very fast and exactly as described. Works great with my camera. I get about 1 hour of battery life which is what is promised. I don't get the battery display, but that was how it was described. It was such a good price I'll probably buy several more as backups.

Delivery was prompt. Batteries works well as spares but not nearly as good as OEM. Canon smart batteries provide for battery status on the camera; generics do not. Lasts about half as long as the OEM. Nevertheless, can't beat the price and very happy with the product. Highly recommend the generic batteries as spares but realizing its limitation.

Great product at a great price, only problem is the camera doesn't recognize the battery and can't tell you the time left on the battery.
