5.0 out of 5 stars What an Album, January 24, 2002

i'm fairly new to alison brown's music. i saw her for the first time at telluride last year when she played with the boom chicks. i bought her grammy winning album 'fair weather' and absolutely loved it. a great bluegrass album, by the way, if you're looking for one to add to your collection. a friend told me she had a new one coming out in early 2002 so i bought a copy a few weeks ago. you've got to get this if you don't already have it! just all around awesome acoustic music. it is less 'studio' oriented and more like a live performance in the sense that the band members take solos. you can just tell they are having fun! i think she even plays some killer guitar on a few tracks. alison's playing amazed me in person and it does the same on this disc. i highly suggest getting yourself a copy. help spread the word on her playing. she's really great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your father's bluegrass, November 24, 2002

I originally bought this album after hearing a review on NPR. Overall, it's excellent. The album was recorded in only a couple of days, which lends the feeling that it's more like a live performance than a canned recording. Overall, the quartet is *very* tight, and they complement each other perfectly.

There is a good variety of pieces on this album, from more fast-tempo traditional bluegrass style to a couple of lullaby-like ballads. Definitely worth a listen!!

I am new to Alison Brown's style of music.
But I simply love the light airy sound of
the banjo with the jazz. It is a treat for
the ears.

Where have these guys been all my life? I'm a little slow in catching on sometimes. Good writing, playing and recording, though a little easy listeningish at times for me.
How come acoustic guitar reviews never mention her abilities on the instrument?

I am very happy to recommend ms Brown's REPLAY; it's an amazing album. I personally think it's her best, though there are some songs from other albums. It's essentially described as a cover album, taking the band's best and recording them all in a fun weekend. The passion shows. The best way to describe the sound would be something akin to an Appalachian-jazz fusion kind of thing(she plays the banjo)--as absurd as that sounds, you will love it. There's a ton of energy and beauty written into each song. Ms Brown is highly intelligent, having degrees in literature and history from Harvard, and has composed most of the songs on the album. No need to be scared off by the banjo; there's some country feel to it, but there's definitely a light jazz vibe, as well, and it's a perfect example of how music is music, and good music transcends any genre.
