Reefs Silent, yet Powerful Debut,
By
This review is from: Replenish (Audio CD)
Replenish is Reef{s debut cd, nonetheless they come out strong and ready to impact the world with their Alternative yet pop-concious rock act.Replenish is full with soft steady melodies that guide the listener with clean but not sober guitars, warm bass riffs, and a filling percussion set, and Gary Stringer's Black Crowish Voice. In comparison to the bands following records, this debut comes out well reserved and silent. By its undistorted melodies, and Stringer's reserved voice, seems more that this was a safe release than anything else. In this record you wont hear gary's voice go up and down through various scales, and you wont hear him shout and you wont hear that wreckless scrathy voice from "place your hands" "set the record straight" or "summers in bloom." Instead you get a singer who is not that conscious of his great voice and who is a little afraid to use it. Replenish distinguishes itself for having great blues influence that is turned into soft rock melodies involving chants that resemble a high tuned chaman dancing around in the beaches of the UK. Maybe most notable in this cd is "naked," the song that put Reef on the popular list. But my personal favourites are "replenish" which starts out with a beautiful bass, and drums that play along with the music, and then continues with a mystical chant. Also "comfort" a song where the lyrics state that a woman is in need. The rest of the songs are equally appealing, and very entertaining. Replenish is a great album, by a great band, even if they decided to stay reserved, and keep a little energy for their following album. My recomendation is that you hear this album. Maybe in a beach somewhere, close to the sea and a bonfire. It will put you in mood, and you will like what you are hearing. This cd is a good buy.

when the world ends, and somebody looks back @ music...,

they are going to see classical music and blues as really influential... and of course all of the pop culture stuff. they will see hip hop and all that too. heavy metal and rock music won't interest them as much because blues is the original genre there. but, I [...] you not, when they listen to Reef, they will slobber and dance naked. they will esteem humans as the finest race ever because Reef is so damn good. as someone else on this board said, Reef are inspiring in the most powerful way.

Naked is the finest song of 1996. Download it and play it loud. Dance till you sweat. Think Led Zep crossed with Rage Against the machine. It'll do something to restore your faith in music. It can still electrify and make you move.

I remember when this came out, back in the day...heady days of summer. I missed meeting the guys from Reef by a year, I went to the same college a year after they left to do my A-Levels. This was the time when Nirvana was big, the red hot chilli peppers were storming the charts with their blood sugar...album. I remember those days, back when I was told Kurt Cobain died, my laugh and shock.
But then there was also Reef. The purple tape did the rounds, we all listend to it. I was getting into heavier music at the time, I was soon into Fear factory and Korn. But back then, for a brief moment it brought a small bit of pride to know a band not a milion miles from me was about to emerge; looking back I even lived in Butley as a small child. The album itself, I remember many of thought the original purple tape was better, sadly I no longer have a copy. The album is a mix of rock and blues for the 90's. You wont be disappointed, it opens with Feed Me and leads onto Naked. That Sony advert certainly did throw them in the limelight back in the day. In fact there really isnt one dud track on thsi album. From mix of agit rock of feed me down to humming athems such as "Mellow" this is a great debut. Some say Reef got better, but for me this is it.... although I am still listening to all of their stuff years later.

This is a great debut by Reef. If you are new to them I would suggest getting this classic album. It's worth it just for Good Feeling, Repulsive and Together. Also you must hear Loose and End they are the greatest! Also if you can, get the Sweety single with Triumphant Anthem on, its a great song!

Most Reef fans will say that this is their favourite album and you can see why. This album contains their more well known songs such as Naked and Repulsive. Anyway heres what I think.Heres how I rate the songs 1 Feed Me - Great opener, personal fave, great lyrics A+ 2 Naked - Reached no 9 in charts, the song that made Reef famous, 2nd single A+ 3 Good Feeling - My fave on the album, reached no 24, 1st single A+ 4 Repulsive - Love the chorus, nice verses, great when played live A+ 5 Mellow - Great drums and acoustic guitar, nice ending A 6 Together - Also on the Weird single, a slower song with great lyrics A 7 Replenish - Instrumental, very different A 8 Choose To Live - Longest song on the album, a demo edit is available on the Naked single, great song bit too long but still it's good B+ 9 Comfort - Great song, another favourite of mine, good lyrics A 10 Loose - 2nd best song in my opinion, should have been a single, love the chorus and the line 'can we handle it?' A+ 11 End - A short edning to the album, live versions are both on the Good Feeling single and the Weird single, classic A+ Overall - Great debut album, I would reccomend this to new Reef fans 10/10
