Editorial Reviews

This crazy, erotic sci-fi romp tells the story of top secret military experiment that turns burly soldiers into sexy nymphomaniac babes who turn into gators when they reach orgasm! The film stars Gunnar Hansen (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and scream queen Brinke Stevens who reveals her finest assets. A cult classic ripe for rediscovery, Repligator offers non-stop fun and plenty of topless babes.

"Repligator" is a 1997 movie from Texas auteur Bret McCormick who channels Roger Corman at his campiest. The film is full of well-proportioned women, bungling military men, egomaniacal scientists, and of course bipedal alligator women called "Gator Babes." It's obvious from the box, but this cheapie is really, really bargain basement entertainment. It was written in a week by Keith Kjornes (who also stars as Dr. Stanley Oliver, and who uncoincidentally gets the hottest women) and shot the next week all to take advantage of sets left over from another movie that were going to stand for two weeks after wrapping the previous production. I am not sure that was so important, as the lab equipment and set are so hokey that John Carradine or Ed Wood would feel right at home, and Doris Wishman would positively love it.

The film sets up the premise with a ludicrous and painfully acted pre-credit sequence which segues into some of the most eye-rolling credits in film history. Finally the film gets underway when Colonel Sanders (Carl Merritt) enters the story bellowing, a manner of dramatic delivery that ensues for every single line he has. He is irritated with longhaired scientist Dr. Kildare (Gunnar Hansen who you no doubt remember from "Texas Chainsaw Massacre") because of an embarrassing leak to the press. Sanders is, however, captivated when he discovers that Kildare has invented x-ray spectacles. (Seriously.) There is lots of backstory of the intermingling of the "replicator" project and a mind control project and the lunatic scientists in charge of each. The pseudo-science techno-babble quotient is extremely high here, mostly from a female doctor with an unfortunate bit of makeup, and who you just know is going to end up a babe or an alligator (or both.) Dr.

This movie is complete trash, and has no ambition to be anything but complete trash. It looks like it was filmed over a weekend in someone's workplace that was closed, the only music is a weird little repeating sims-like synthesizer tune, and it's the weirdest twisting of a male fantasy I've yet seen in an exploitation film (defined here as "a film with old male protagonists with young nymphomaniacs constantly flinging themselves at them" more than "a 1970's zombie movie with tits"). On the one hand, it's obviously massively sexist and homophobic, but on the other hand, I'm not at all sure either of those things is meant to be taken seriously.

It definitely deserves its one star, but if you enjoy trash cinema you might still like it. I watched it because it was recommended by Diamanda Hagan, and I'm pretty sure it was overpriced at the $4 rental it is on Amazon here.

Though it's always nice to see the likes of Gunnar Hansen and Brinke Stevens still working, this ghastly, hideously un-funny, sci-fi / sex "comedy" is nowhere near being watchable. Now, I freely admit that the idea of male to female to reptile transformation did spark my interest. Alas, my buzz was about to be massacred. I endured its entire length, so that others won't have to. No, it's not the dollar-store "special" FX, robotic "acting", or fall-to-the-ground-like-3000lb-anchors "humor" that make REPLIGATOR so reprehensible. All of these elements, done right, could have resulted in a masterpiece. Here, the end product is an inept, excruciatingly, pluck-my-eyes-out-with-a-screwdriver, boring disaster! Even the abundant nudity did little to keep my eyelids from slamming shut! Save yourselves! Pretend you never heard of this cringe-a-thon...
