The successor to O'Brian, February 18, 2005
This review is from: The Reprise Series - The Turning Tide & Driftwood (Paperback)
O'Brian had it all--drama, comedy, espionage, murder, discoveries, food, etc. If you are looking for the successor to Aubrey/Maturin, this is the nearest one yet! Yes, there's humor, but there's also true drama. The true skill of this author is the revelation of truth to the readers while allowing each character's perception of truth (and the expected reactions) to remain in context. There is a nod to the formulaic relationship found in O'Brian novels, but this is done respectfully and without malice of any sort. The lilting use of English makes this author even more appealing. I am looking forward to more books by this author!

Devilish and dastardly!, May 2, 2004
This review is from: The Reprise Series - The Turning Tide & Driftwood (Paperback)
The author leaves us with no room for suposition when it comes to scenarios - we've got the sea, ladies gossiping in Drawing Rooms, adultery, a duel and a highwayman! Good, clean fun with great characters that speak great English - I love a man in breeches who says things like 'Damn yer eyes man!' It echoes other writers and fictional characters of the Napoleonic period, a touch of Jane Austen here and a dash perhaps of Hornblower there and its fun. It does stray into parody but what the heck, I liked it!

The Reprise Series -The Turning Tide & Driftwood, April 27, 2004
This review is from: The Reprise Series - The Turning Tide & Driftwood (Paperback)
The book is a real mix of genres and 'voices', you have humor, relationships, a sea story and history woven together, which some readers might find a bit unusual! The characters also seem to address the reader at some points and I rather liked that, I felt involved or party to some secret thoughts or feelings of the characters. The story is initially set aboard the HMS Reprise during the Napoleonic Wars and then ashore in Cove, Co Cork, Ireland and I thought that was unusual too, I don't associate that famous Irish port (Queenstown of Titanic fame) with the Napoleonic Wars at all, but the author states that this was the case. In fact its an unusual book and personally I really enjoyed it.
