More About the Author

Gospel Light continues on the foundation established by Dr. Henrietta C. Mears and to the mission God called her to. Henrietta C. Mears was one of the great Bible teachers of the 20th century. While Christian Education Director at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, she built one of the largest Sunday Schools in the world and wrote curriculum that was in such high demand that to publish it she founded Gospel Light in 1933.

Gospel Light has expanded into a multi-faceted publisher of fun and creative Sunday School curriculum, exciting Vacation Bible School programs and inspiring biblical books (Regal). The mission of Gospel Light is to know Christ and make Him known; to provide His Church with effective Bible teaching and learning resources for use in making disciples, empowering them for godly living, equipping them for ministry and the evangelization of the world. To accomplish this mission, our strategic vision is to provide local church leaders with evangelism, discipleship and Christian education resources which will help them reach for Christ and make disciples of their church's families, singles, children and youth, and which will help them equip their church to reach their communities, cities and regions for Christ.

At Gospel Light, we remember what it's like to see the world through a child's eyes. We help them learn about God and His Word through hands-on activities that engage their intense curiosity and openness to learning new things. For nearly 70 years, Gospel Light has equipped teachers with the best tools for reaching children with the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

I'm a youth pastor and I purchased this book in hopes of finding some maps to help my students better understand the background context of the bible.

I was very pleased with this book because in addition to the maps, it also has lots of great charts and visuals of the tabernacle, temple, ancient cities, etc, AND had a page on each book of the Bible with an outline/major themes to boot! On top of all of that, everything in the book is made to be reproduced; simply put it on the copier and go - no worries about copyrights!

The only thing that could have made the book better would have been some more detailed outlines of the various Bible books, and maybe some rough biographies of some of the major figures.

But I'm not complaining! It is a great resource and well worth the price. I highly recommend it!

This is a wonderful book to supplement any read through the Bible plan. With charts and timelines and summaries, I am able to see the "BIG PICTURE" of the Bible.
We are using this in conjunction with the Young Explorers book to homeschool through the Bible.

This book purports to include all the charts from the NIV Study Bible, but it does not. It leaves out the chart of Biblical covanents, for instance. Also, the table of contents in incomplete. The book has the parables and the miracles of Jesus, as well as many maps, but does not list them or give page numbers. You have to thumb through the book to find them. What it does have is good, but the omissions and lack of easy access to the material make it harder to use than it should be.

Although the written information in the book is good, it really overtakes the "maps, charts and timelines" which was the whole reason that I bought the book. The illustrations are shrunk down to accommodate the text - many are relegated to only half a page with text all around making the actual image frequently only about an inch square. The picture of the temple, for example is very small and very hard to see all the important items in the temple in their proper places. It would be nearly impossible for students to take notes in the margins because of all the clutter. The text is in a really small font making it hard to read. And finally, the timeline images are disappointing. For example, the kings are represented by nearly the same image (only a cartoon face with a crown and beard) making it hard to remember anything specific or special from one king to the next so the timeline ends up looking like a bunch of the same faces with names under them. It would have been nice to have custom made images of more than just a face - perhaps a king in a defining moment for example, on the timeline that would have invoked more information and learning.

I've been using the maps and timelines from this book with my women's Sunday School class. They love knowing the context and history surrounding our weekly lessons.

If you teach others, you need this book! Ditto everything the other reviewers have said. The companion book "What the Bible is all about for Young Explorers" is essential too!
