Editorial Reviews

Review

"Great - straightforward - fantastic. 3 words I have to say about this little minx of a Glance. It takes you from the pituitary gland all the way through girls and boys anatomy, fertilisation, pregnancy, gynae conditions and finally to a few nasty bits and bobs you only want to read about - not have...Heffner and Schust have done well, with a nice double spread covering each topic; you can either just look at the siccinct diagrams or read all of the text for that well rounded approach." Black Bag, Bristol University Medical School Gazette

"A well written book with clear descriptions of the normal reproductive function of both sexes and their disorders...Perfect for those PBL sessions on reproductive biology." Surgo, Glasgow University Medical Journal, 78:4

"Exactly as the title says, you get brief but detailed information on hormone production and action on reproductive system development, and the associated disorders. It is brilliant for gaining a basic understanding of the reproductive system. With the aid of colourful pitctures and reasonably simple explanations, this book makes it easy for you to understand the basic principles." QMM Magazine, Birmingham University

2.0 out of 5 stars Weird cultural biases make this book tough to recommend, November 20, 2011
By
Ian B. Cooper (Silver Spring, MD, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book may be good as a general resource, but prospective buyers should be aware of some very strange biases. For example, the book states that the foreskin (prepuce) "is removed by the operation of circumcision". It does not say that it 'may be removed' - it says that it 'is removed'. As an Englishman, that's the first I've heard of circumcision being something that is 'just done'. I still have my foreskin, as do the vast majority of the world's men. Only in the US is this outdated and severely sexually damaging operation still routinely performed as a medical procedure. In almost every other country, the procedure is viewed as a harmful holdover from Victorian misconceptions about reproduction and its effect on health.

Readers would be well served to seek out alternative books on the subject and check for cultural biases before buying.
