Great Pet Keepers Info.,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Reptiles (1-year) (Magazine)
If you are into reptiles, you can not go wrong with the many, many issues of Reptiles magazine. They are very factual about their information. Sometimes they even give personal opinions and experieices. There are sectons about the care of animals, sections about the population and legal status, and also sections about animal search expeditions. In the Dec. 2001 issue, they have a great article on the conservation of the Aruba Island Rattlesnake. I personally spend time studying and learning about this species as well. They are very factual on their information. They do not get information from books, or other written documents, they interview people that have gone to the island of Aruba and worked with these animals firsthand. They also have wonderful keeping and breeding information on different species each month. Like in the Feb. 2002 issue, they give great informatnion on keeping and breeding Feas vipers and Pictus geckos, again, they have done all of this themselves, and know what works and what doesnt. I would recommend these magazines to everyone into reptiles and/or amphibians. They have great beginner information, like good choices for the first pets, and how to take care of them. They are also good for the advanced keepers. They give information on keeping and breeding rare and difficult animals, They also have interesting search expeditions that interest people of all experience levels.

Exotic and domestic,

I'm in agreement with other reviewers that the magazine does tend to focus too much on exotic species, from the Galapagos Islands to Madagascar; but, for the most part, I found this to be tempered by many very helpful articles for the average herp owner. I have 2 boas, some chameleons, an iguana, and a python--and I believe that "Reptiles" focus on all reptiles has given me a better understanding of my own. This isn't necessarily geared 100% toward the pet owner, but more for the overall enthusiast.

Perfect!,

I'm a solid reader of Reptiles for 3 years now. I LOVE IT! Before I was ever keeping and breeding reptiles myself, I was enjoying this magazine. Every issue is chocked full of pictures and information beyond belief, and it's a good way to shop around to see who's breeding what this year. Great magazine, it's a must get for any herper or plain ol person!

Not bad, when I recieve any in mail?,

This review is from: Reptiles (1-year) (Magazine)
I have had the same problem that a previous reviewer said. I have had a Reptiles magazine subscription a few years back and a current one. The previous order had a missing issue and my subscription was not extended. Now my most recent has annoyed me. I recieved three issues, and then no more isues. Even though the Reptiles mag site says I should have recieved at least two issues since then, and I got a supposed extension. After this subscription, no more. I'll do as I have in the past, purchase them as I see them and only if the subjects interest me. So the warning is that this magazine can be unreliable.

I was already a subscriber to reptiles magazine, but Amazon was offering it at a great price. This day and age, I almost think that magazines are worthless; since I can get all the information I need from the internet. But this publication is always a great read. They have monthly contests and show off drawings and the pictures are always great. My wife and I always turn to the "Guess that skull" challenge every time the new issue shows up to see who can figure it out first.

Best of the Bow Tie publications,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Reptiles Magazine (1-year auto-renewal) (Magazine)
I've subscribed to Reptiles for a couple of years. I also subscribe to other magazines published by Bow Tie, including Cat Fancy, Dog Fancy, and Bird Talk. Reptiles is definitely the best of the bunch. Their articles tend to be longer and far more substantive than the others. The only reptiles I keep are turtles, but I find it quite fascinating to learn about the many species featured, even ones I'm sure I'll never have. In fact, I've learned that there are some critters I shouldn't have--their needs and mine would never mesh. Writers are often people who breed and raise the animal. I like it that they don't tell you to "check with your vet" every third paragraph--they just tell you what works for them. Of course, some of these species are quite rare in captivity and only a very specialized vet would be familiar with them.
I'd recommend this magazine for people who are generally interested in reptiles and for those who are thinking of getting a reptile pet. You may find yourself introduced to some animals you'd never thought of keeping. It may be too basic for those with lots of experience, but for the rest of us it's a great source of general knowledge. The only downside is the ads. The classifieds are basically the same every month. Particular product ads are often matched to the articles--ok I guess, but it sometimes makes you wonder whether the advertisers or the editors are driving the magazine. However, Bird Talk and Cat Fancy are much worse in this regard.

Being a girl, I particularly love this publications for various reasons.,

This review is from: Reptiles (1-year) (Magazine)
This is a wonderful publication; probably the best on the market in this genre. I have been subscribing to this for years...well, about five or six, actually. I have yet to receive and read an issue that I did not learn something new. It keeps me up to date.
I have a particular problem when it comes to Reptiles...I am a girl. Now I have been collecting, raising, photographing and fooling with these creatures since I was a little girl. I was raised in a family quite involved with collecting, breeding and selling these creatures. I did not just fall out of a plump tree when it comes to this subject. But then being a girl presents a lot of problems. I go to many of the big shows and Reptile Meets around the country and a great number of the "guys" automatically start "talking down" to me the instant I have a question. It is either being talked down to, or what is even worse, it is being hit on. Now I agree that reptiles are sexy little beasties, hey some of them sort of turn me on working with them, but good grief! This causes problems as I am either not getting the in-depth information I am looking for or I am trying to defend my virtue and virginity (ha, ha - sorry, that is long, long gone). This publication though has solved many of my problems. I have been able to make many contacts in the Reptile World via mail and email and have found that I get a much better response if I am a faceless and bodiless neuter. Go figure! Anyway, that is a personal problem but I just wanted people to know that this publication is a great way of gleaning information and making contacts with out all the face to face hassles that go along with it. The photographs are wonderful (another point of interest for me) and the articles very professionally done. Even the articles that do not go into the depth I require are helpful as the tend to motivate me to do further research...always a good thing. Love this publication!

Knowledgable about all types of herps!,
By Rachel (Bored in Bend) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Reptiles (1-year) (Magazine)
This is a great magazine because it balances information about herps that are suitable for pets (The stuff you'd find in a pet store) but also has interesting information on more exotic, unsuitable animals. I wouldn't want to own a Rhino Viper, but I enjoyed reading about it! I first read it in 95', and have recently gotten back into it. I just got my first 2 snakes (corn and milk) and am trying to find back issues that deal with them. Sure, there are a lot of books out there, but there's so much conflicting information out there, so I'm going with someone I trust!

If you're into Reptiles, this is the mag for you!,

This review is from: Reptiles (1-year) (Magazine)
What a great magazine! In a world that's often less than thrilled with cold-blooded pets, it's often hard to find a source of information on reptiles and amphibians. Well, look no further than Reptiles Magazine! It's filled with great articles on common herptiles from the pet trade, as well as features on rarer specimens that normal pet owners would have to travel across the world to see. The color photography in this magazine is absolutely tops, and stories on care and feeding of animals are always informed, accurate and well written. I, my wife, and all my reptile and amphibian pets love it! You will too.
