Grade 6 Up-- This attractive, comprehensive volume covers the evolutionary history, behavior, physiology, habitat, and classification of reptiles and amphibians. A general introduction to the two animal classes, which includes a chapter on endangered species and a classification chart, is followed by separate sections devoted to each respectively. These specialized sections are further subdivided into signed chapters written by professors, scientists, and museum directors. The book is similar to the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Wildlife (Grey Castle, 1990) in that both are arranged according to the scientific classification scheme. Cogger's text is accompanied by colorful and detailed drawings, diagrams, and maps. All this is topped off by the glossy, full-color action photographs that capture the reptiles and amphibians in myriad behaviors and serve to highlight and reinforce the textual information. The depth of coverage and rich visuals make this an excellent resource for libraries serving young adults.
