Grade 3-5-- Markert profiles 12 reptiles in separate, double-page sections. The large-print text briefly describes some of the individual animal's major physical or behaviorial characteristics. Most segments, but not all, also mention its diet; about half list its geographical range. A full-page, full-color photo of the creature appears opposite its discussion. While the text is clearly written, it lacks organization. The animals appear in random order, with no connecting passages. The omission of salient facts is another serious weakness. For instance, the introduction provides only minimal information on the common characteristics of all reptiles. The term "cold-blooded" is not defined. The average size of the animals is usually not given; the two instances where it is included are imprecise. No picture captions are included and most of the species depicted are not identified in the text, even by common name. Although the photos are of good quality, about half of them are closeups showing only the subject's head. Kate Petty's Reptiles (Gloucester, 1987; o.p.) provides more detailed information. More thorough, better written introductions, such as Caroline Arnold's Snake (Morrow, 1991) and Schneiper's Chameleons (Carolrhoda, 1989), are also available. --Karey Wehner, San Francisco Public Library
