One of the prefered translations, according to my professor,

I bought this last year for my Philosophy 101 class. According to my professor, Dr. Nauman, this is one of his favorite translations. So, I thought I would give it a shot. I agree with him, it was very good. If you're contemplating getting a copy of this book, don't hesitate on this one. I would, however, like to point out one thing. My boyfriend who attends St. John's University has to take Ancient Greek freshman year, as all first-classers do at that school. Therefore, he knows how to translate the Greek himself. And, according to him, Allen Bloom's translation is his personal favorite. So, I guess it just depends upon opinion. Either one you choose, you really should read this book.

I love the Republic. Fantastic philosophical insight. It should be required reading for everyone. The book arrived damaged, however. I will buy my books from B&N from now on.

This is the translation everyone should read. It's extremely easy to read and it turns the otherwise difficult dialogue in to a type of readable story line that keeps you interested in the mind blowing issues being discussed only a couple thousand years ago. This version definitely brings Plato's Republic back to the present day.
As for the book it self, it's just unbelievable. In the fact that it was written over a thousand years ago.And also because so much has changed since then, but the issues are all things we still contemplate today. This book will change the way you think if you let it. It has been thousands of years and still few works of present day writers can rival it. Just incredible. |
