Book Description

September 26, 2007
An informal sequel to the award-winning The Land That Could Be: Environmentalism and Democracy in the Twenty-First Century, A Republic of Trees is the latest installment in William Shutkin's on-going quest to align natural and human-made systems into one unified, bold and sustainable model for social and economic development. The book invites us to imagine a political order in which society and nature are seen as interdependent, as sustaining each other in a new republic, a Republic of Trees.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"There is more insight and vision packed into this little volume than in the last five books I've read." --Mark Dowie

"A Republic of Trees is a bold, timely collection that makes accessible Shutkin's unique insights as a leading environmental social entrepreneur, lawyer, and educator. A Republic of Trees is a must-read for all those who believe or wish to believe that a green and just world is possible and a primer on how to get there." --Cheryl L. Dorsey

"A Republic of Trees is a powerful work that's striking for its grace, humility, and gentle persuasion. In challenging us to create a more sustainable future, Bill Shutkin doesn't scold but appeals to our better nature. His book is a worthy successor to Aldo Leopold's classic A Sand County Almanac. Shutkin argues that it's no longer enough to think like a mountain; we must think like a city, a nation, a planet." --David Baron

Bill Shutkin is a very intelligent, worthy source for essays like these. This is a great book, full of questions and inspiration for our times. Be encouraged about social change initiatives and how we each might take a part through this thought-provoking collection.
