Great Budget Quasi-Anthology CD,
By
This review is from: By Request (Audio CD)
This budget CD features 14 of the 50 tracks from the great 5 CD box set Celebrating 50 Years of Del McCoury.
Most bluegrass fans are familiar with Del McCoury's legacy, so I won't go into all those details here. But for those new to the music, I will say that there is no finer bluegrass band than McCoury's, musically speaking. His lead singing is high and lonesome; McCoury is simply one of the greatest bluegrass lead vocalists of all time (right up there with Carter Stanley, Mac Wiseman, Jimmy Martin, Charlie Moore, Red Allen, Larry Sparks and Dudley Connell). McCoury has performed traditional bluegrass music since the late 1950s; early in his career was a member of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys and began fronting his own band in the late 1960s (initially named the Dixie Pals). This CD mostly features the more traditional aspect of the Del McCoury Band on 10 newly recorded versions of McCoury's most popular songs plus 4 previously issued songs ("Nashville Cats," "A Good Man Like Me," "All Aboard" and the magnificent "1952 Vincent Black Lightening"). Great sampler for those unable to splurge on Celebrating 50 Years of Del McCoury.

This is an extra ordinary Bluegrass album by a master of the genre and member of the Grand Ole Opry. All of the songs are well done and quite a few are classics including 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. A must buy!
