Re-recordings of an artist's own hits can be suspicious affairs, as if the artist in question had nothing new to say but just needed to make a marketing move. However, singer Jon lucien obviously still has a lot to express on these remakes of his most requested songs. This immensely enjoyable disc has a wonderfully natural sophistication about it, like a fifty-something suitor whose quiet worldliness carries far more charm than his youthful, noisier competition. Lucien wrote seven of the 11 tunes here and uses intimate, acoustic-guitar-based settings to communicate romance with intelligence as well as sensitivity. On "Song for My Lady," Lucien wraps his warm voice around the tune's yearning chord changes with inventive aplomb. He also contributes superb guitar work to the seductive "Luna mi Luna" and re-harmonizes "The Shadow of Your Smile" into a beautiful piece of balladry. Cliff Korman's synth chord voicings have a warm immediacy that sparkles in their interplay with Dan Carillo's colorful electric guitar, as on the jubilant "Soul Mate." One stunning moment occurs during an ingenious re-working of "The Sound of Music," when Lucien transforms the overworked Broadway anthem into a pulsating paean to life. A vibrant gift from an artist to his fans, By Request is one of the finest vocal sets of the year.

Jon Lucien is one of the very best romantic jazz vocalists ever yet he has never gotten the recognition and acclaim he deserves. This is his most intimate, heartfelt, soulful and sensual album to date and will forever show what a special singer Jon is. Buy it if only for "Hello Like Before".

I always liked Jon Lucien. My biggest regret is that I waited until his passing to buy one of his cds. But this cd so captures and reflects the wonderfulness that was Jon Lucien, the richness and undeniable quality-- so that in two notes you knew it was him singing. I love this cd.

The brilliance of this album blew me away so completely I had to force myself to play another disc! The new arrangements and new instrumentation were remakable! I don't want to use too many superalatives in my description of this recording but, quite simply it is a joy to listen too!
