An epic conclusion to Der Schwarze Schmetterling (The Black Butterfly) Series,

This review is from: Requiembryo (Audio CD)
This two disc CD album by Asp completes their five part gothic novel rock series, Der Schwarze Schmetterling (Or The Black Butterfly). There were a couple of things about this album that reminded me of previous works from very well known musical talents outside of Germany. For example, The first song entitled Offährte, roughly translated as Off the trail, reminded me of The Who's Tommy and how the first song off their album would reference each of the great and upcoming songs that were featured on the album. Also, to some extent, it felt like, what I like to call, a bridge album. Atom Heart Mother is an example of a bridge album as Pink Floyd were transiting from the Syd Barret Sound to the David Glimour sound. How this relates to this term is that the songs would go from Industrial Metal to Folk/Folk Rock (Ex. Duett (Das Minnelied Der Incubi/en:The Love song of the Incubi),One of my biggest favorite tracks off this album, being folk rock and Ich Bin Ein Wahrer Satan (I Am A True Satan), also one of my favorite tracks, being Industrial Metal)and later that Folk/Folk Rock sound would later be used solely in their sixth album, Zauberbruden: Der krabat Liederzyklus (Or Sorcerer Brothers: The Krabat Song Cycle). The Requiem suite happens to also feature a slighly shortened version of one of my favorite Asp songs, Sanctus Benedictus (Blessed by the holy). Alexander Spreng once again brings forth crisp baritones with exquisite lyrics to each of his songs which conjugates into an excellent style and creates a rousing gothic story, the benefit being that you know fluent german but none the less very pleasing to the eardrums not to mention that he throws in a few songs in english and hints of latin to make a variety. The band is in no way satanic or devil worshiping, as I would have not purchased this if it were so, and I highly reccomend this album for any gothic, NDH, or good music loving fan as a Best Buy.Written by Gavin Campbell |
