We are left hanging, wanting more.,
By KidsReads (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rescue (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 3) (Paperback)
In this third installment of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series, Soren is no longer that inexperienced young owl who didn't know his place in the world. Almost ready to become a Guardian of Ga'Hoole, his training nearly complete, Soren is confident of his skills and knowledge, yet he is far from happy. The loss of his grumpy and unpredictable teacher, Ezylryb, has left him very depressed and unable to enjoy his life and reunion with his sister. Then, something truly bizarre and unsettling occurs. While on a training mission, Soren is visited by the scrooms, or ghosts, of his parents. They warn him of something terrible: "Metal! Beware Metal Beak!" Soren and his friends had once witnessed the death of an owl who told them that there was something even more awful than the so-called owl orphanage that they had run away from. At the time they had found this hard to believe. Now they are beginning to realize that there is something truly evil out there, something dreadful threatening all the owls. They can also see that the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place --- there was the strange abduction of Soren's sister and the other little owls, the loss of Ezylryb, the death of the loner owl, and the warning from Soren's parents. Everything seemed to point to this unknown owl called Metal Beak. Who was he and what did he want? Soren and friends Digger, Gylfie and Twilight set out to find the answers to these questions. They also take some new friends and companions from the Ga'Hoole tree with them. With the skills they have all learned, they hope to be able to handle whatever challenges face them on this new and frightening quest. Once again Kathryn Lasky takes us into her fascinating world of owls. Not only do they have their own history, mythology, language and sense of humor, the owls also have their own unique way of seeing the world. For them the black of night has shades of black, tones and depths that give them the power to see the world in a distinctive way. Their gizzards do more than crush their food; they also warn and guide them, giving them a sense of the future and the past. Lasky has given her owls a depth of personality that is fascinating and captivating. She also leaves us with enough questions unanswered that we are left hanging, wanting more. --- Reviewed by Marya Jansen-Gruber (...)

The Rescue,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Rescue (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 3) (Paperback)
The third book in the Guardians of Ga'hoole series.Soren and his friends must find his favorite teacher Ezylryb, who teaches the colliering chaw.A chaw is like a subject in school. Colliering is the the study of fire, the young owls must get coals from forest fires to fuel the blacksmith's forge who makes battle claws, plates and cups. The Pure Ones,(who think that Barn Owls are the best of all species)may have something to do with Ezylryb disappearence. On their quest to save Ezylryb they have to face the Pure Ones leader Metal Beak(who has a metal mask on his face). There is a great suprise ending. You might be a little confused if you don't read the other 2 books first, but still a great book.

2 thumbs up!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Rescue (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 3) (Paperback)
I am really excited about this series! It is one of those books that you get a really satisfied feeling when you've finished it, but at the same time you are craving more. Before I picked up these books I thought practically nothing of owls. Now I know tons of facts I'd never thought of before, and have a whole new outlook about them. though this series is made up of 8 books, the books in this series are kinda short (especially the third one) but I still enjoy reading them. There were parts in the first book where I felt kinda bored, but as with all good series it takes a while for the plot to unfold. In some ways this book was kinda predictable (like I knew metal beak was soren's brother) but the mood also took on a mysterious air. One of my favorite things about this book is how well the characters are developed. Soren:leader Gylfie: practical, yet enjoys big words Digger: deep thinker Twilight: boastful yet trueIn a way this series also reminded me of two other of my favorite series. First, the redwall series (except for the way mice and other rodents are now prey) and second, the warriors series. If you like animals and adventure, then all three series are definately for you

Fantastic for the Ga'Hoolian fans!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Rescue (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 3) (Paperback)
"The Rescue" is about Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, and Digger, four owls who have banded together to defeat the evil in the owl kingdom. But Soren's favorite ryb, Ezylryb, has vanished. Only the reappearance of Soren's sister Eglantine seems to ease the tension. But another, more sinister evil has entered the owl kingdom. And only Soren and his pals are ready to save Ezylryb and defeat this evil. Five stars for a fantastic novel!

Just Couldn't Get Into It,
By
This review is from: The Rescue (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 3) (Paperback)
I know this series has a bunch of fans and this isn't a knock against them, but I just couldn't get into it. I'm an adult, but I generally love to read kids books. Perhaps this is just one series you can't just pick up in the middle and be hooked on. If you loved the early two books, I'm sure you'll have no problem enjoying this one too. The jargon just annoyed me, but if you start at the beginning, perhaps you've been eased into the world-specific language. No one or two characters stood out as especially brave, bold, courageous, or special at all. Also, the events seemed kind of boring. They flew to meet the roguesmith... and flew back... and got in trouble (flitmop)... They figured out where their favorite teacher must be and flew off to rescue him. (that very last part I'm assuming since I didn't bother reading the last 50 pages... I was just too bored with the whole thing) I gave it a shot because I'd heard a lot of hype about the movie a few months ago. Though, now I haven't heard much about the movie, good or bad.

A little short ...,
This review is from: Rescue (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 3) (School & Library Binding)
The Rescue was good. It had great character development and an interesting plot. But...it was to short. only 180 pages. the others were near 200. I'm not telling you not to read it. But ... it could be better |
