Editorial Reviews

Review

“A steamy story with plenty of fast-paced action on and off the ice.” (Booklist)

“Gibson’s straightforward story of “the one,” and the one that got away, is wrapped in sexual tension so hot your palms will sweat.” (Booklist)

“The NHL ought to pay writer Rachel Gibson big bucks.” (USA Today)

From the Back Cover

She's 33, unmarried, and stuffed into a Bubble Yum pink bridesmaid dress. And the whole town wants to fix her up with anyone with a dental plan . . .

Who's going to rescue Sadie Hollowell now?

Everyone in Lovett, Texas, knows Sadie has always been a "notional" kind of gal. She got a notion to leave town ASAP and never visit her daddy (bless his heart) again. Now she's back and got the notion to invite a good-looking, hard-muscled, total stranger to her cousin's wedding. Better a stranger than some of the losers she's dated.

Vince Haven got his muscles the hard way—as a Navy SEAL in Afghanistan. He's staying in Lovett to visit his crazy aunt—the proprietor of the local Gas and Go. Before he can get the heck back out of the small town, his aunt makes him an offer he can't refuse. Maybe he'll stick around Lovett for a while. Maybe he'll make a "go" of the Gas and Go. Maybe he'll rescue Sadie out of that pink dress!

More About the Author

With the publication of New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Gibson's first book, readers discovered one of contemporary romance's freshest voices. Four of her novels were named among the Top Ten Favorite Books of the Year by Romance Writers of America.

Rachel's storytelling career began at the age of sixteen when she ran her Chevy Vega into the side of a hill, retrieved the bumper and broken glass from the ground, and drove to her high school parking lot. With the help of her friend, she strategically scattered the broken pieces and told her parents she'd been the victim of a hit and run. They believed her, and she's been telling stories ever since.

When not writing, Rachel can be found boating on Payette Lake with Mr. Gibson, shopping for shoes, or forcing her love on an ungrateful cat.

What started off as a very promising read quickly went down hill after the H/h meet on page 16 and did not meet again until page 63. The second meeting was shorter than the first, the 3rd meeting was on page 92, see where I'm going with this. Vince and Sadie spent more time apart during the first half of this book and when they were together it read like 2 ships passing in the night. RG gave the reader a boat load of small town chit chat, Sadie's neighbors were the Cecil B. DeMile cast of 1,000 extras, who are all these people, and why were they important to be included in the story. There are a lot of pages also dedicated to Sadie inner thoughts about her relationship with her father. Vince constantly reminiscing about being a SEAL. It felt like RG was stalling in getting the H/h together, I kept flipping the page trying to get to the part in the book where they interact with each other for more than a page or 2. Once the story hit it's stride around page 175 it was a typical RG romance. Sadie and Vince were looking for a purpose in their lives when they both came to the rescue of their elderly relatives in a small Texas town. Vince a SEAL has commitment issues and a bad case of PTSD, Sadie has a history of daddy issues and failed relationships. They decide to become fbuddies only, as usual that does not last long, and before you know it they both want something deeper. It wouldn't be a RG book without the required misunderstanding of the H being a jerk and walking out on the h, and returning to beg forgiveness before the HEA.

Rescue Me is an ok read, I like the way she writes the interactions between her H/h. That is why I was disappointed in this book, I felt the focus of the story was a little off center, as if she over did it in the world building creating Sadie's life in Texas and did not spend enough time on Vince and Sadie as a couple.

If you're looking for a summer beach read and someone whispers in your ear - Rachel Gibson, Lovett, Texas, `Bubble Yum pink bridesmaid dress,' thirty-three-year-old hot blonde with cowboy hat and boots - and then they tossed in the words - Navy Seal - would you bite?

Darn straight.

`Rescue Me' is Rachel Gibson's latest offering in the summer romance sweepstakes. And it's a lot of the things Gibson's fans expect it to be - funny, hot in all the right places (after all, it is Texas), and predictable.

Which leads us to the biggest problem with `Rescue Me.' There's good predictable (hot, raunchy, funny), and there's `here we go again` predictable. How many times can one be expected to read and enjoy what is basically the same plot with the same characters? And the answer probably is, as many times as she wants to. So....

For those who want a guaranteed lightly amusing and almost satisfying hot romance novel set in Texas and filled with local twang and familiar characters and stratagems, "Rescue Me" may well be what you're looking for.

And for those who want belly laughs and truly hot sex? May I recommend 1999's `Truly Madly Yours,' one of Gibson's best?

Sadie Hollowell left Lovett, Texas at the age of 18 and has only been back for the occasional holiday gathering with her father who she has never gotten along with very well. A young cousin's wedding is what has Sadie coming back to Lovett this time around. Forced by familial obligations to stand up in a wedding she plans on driving in and driving right back out ASAP. When Sadie helps Vince (Autumn's brother from Any Man of Mine (Avon Romance)) with a ride into town after his truck breaks down, she discovers paybacks are sometimes sexy and her stay in Lovett is suddenly looking up.

Both Sadie and Vince have their issues, but their chemistry with each other is never in question. They have an easy friendship, a hot sex life and a relationship that is fun to read without all the games and drama that usually bogs down the road to happily ever after. Sure their road to HEA isn't all paved with sunshine and roses, but the bumps they do encounter are more normal and true to life.

The book ends with a hint at the next story and heroine and I am ever eager to get my hands on that book!

Rachel Gibson has been on my automatic buy list since I discovered her writing many years ago. This book only further cements her place on that list. I laughed, I cried and I flew through this book in one afternoon. I simply couldn't put it down, nor did I want it to end. This is one of those books I will probably read and reread over and over.

Rescue me is Rachel Gibson's latest effort. I was really excited, knew what to expect and expected to find it entertaining, at least amusing here and there but that rarely happened, if at all. I was so disappointed.

The first two or three chapters were promising but it quickly spiraled into crapola junk. Now, fluff romance tend to be superficial and true love happens inside a week. I get that. The characterization is only enough to make the main leads likable, hopefully relatable and just a little bit refreshing. The plot, enough to make it believable. And the hot sex scenes don't hurt ;)! That's Gibson's wheel. She usually does a great job with sex scenes and great banter/dialogue between her main leads.

But Rescue Me was just B-A-D. Bad writing, bad plot, bad characterization and just plain 'off' everywhere. Worse, it was BORING. Vince (last heard of in Any Man of Mine (Avon Romance), as Autumn's big brother) is simply unlikable, constantly disingenuous, willing to sleep with any woman for no reason and not the guy we saw before in that earlier appearance. He's emotionally distant and damaged having been a SEAL and his tough, uncompromising and unreachable exterior is supposed to make him somehow attractive/sexy yet it just doesn't work in light chick lit. And Sadie, there was more effort to make her palpable and relatable but she was sort all over the map. No build up to the attraction at all. There was too much inner dialogue that didn't really move the plot forward or make Vince or Sadie more appealing--it was just dry, never ending and put me to sleep.
