Product Description

The acclaimed, groundbreaking series from creators Denis Leary and Peter Tolan comes to an unforgettable end in this remarkable set combining both the tumultuous Sixth Season and emotional Final Season. As troubled NYPD firefighter Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) confronts his need for rescue and redemption, the crew of 62 Truck wages their own climactic struggle to survive and persevere — both on the front lines and in their personal lives. Embraced by critics and viewers alike for searing, true-to-life performances and unflinching storytelling, Rescue Me closes out its astonishing run with the most compelling seasons of the series.

Bilious, alcoholic New York City fireman Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) literally returns from the dead in the sixth and final season of Rescue Me. But Tommy's haunting vision of the afterlife isn't half as purgatorial as the festival of stress and guilt that is his actual life: his daughter is slipping into addiction, his job is threatened by budget cuts, he's juggling his wife Janet (Andrea Roth) and his dead brother's widow Sheila (Callie Thorne), he feels responsible for the crippling of another fireman, he discovers that Janet is hiding a pregnancy from him, and just about everyone hates him at one time or another. The weakness of Rescue Me has always been the central conflict: vacillating between drinking and not drinking loses its emotional heft over dozens of episodes. Watching everyone in Tommy's life badger and berate him again and again for his floundering attempts to keep them all happy also feels repetitive. But the show's saving grace is its humor, which ranges from goofy verbal banter in the firehouse break room (such as trying to decide if a pavilion is more or less than a million) to the worst excesses of human nature played for maximum comic effect (using a brain-damaged coworker as a ploy to pick up women is only the tip of this iceberg of psychological squalor). At its best, the dark comedy of Rescue Me captures moments that are so startling and true that you don't so much laugh as blanch and maybe blush in recognition. The set contains 19 episodes and a healthy dose of extra features that put the series to rest with honor. --Bret Fetzer

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazon needs to change title of this set November 23, 2011
I spent a good 5 minutes searching for Rescue Me Season 7 before realizing that this set, marked simply "Season 6" in the Amazon selling line, does indeed also INCLUDE Season 7, the final season.

The show of course is superb, and well worth the investment of time and money.

Amazon needs to change the title of this set to reflect the fact that it includes BOTH Season 6 and Season 7.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated show February 10, 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I do rarely write reviews (taste is a fickle subject anyway) but I feel strongly that this series has been highly underrated over it's seven seasons. It is for sure one of the most theatrical series ever written and in my opinion approaches a Shakespearean style in mixing the low comedy with the high tragedy. Add to the mix an excellent cast of actors surrounding Dennis Leary, it makes for compulsive viewing! Why this series never got the attention it deserves, will remain a mystery to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great TV Series June 10, 2010
By Sally

I would watch this show from time to time with no consistency. Each time I saw it I like it but failed to follow up and watch more. After reading several reviews from fans of the show, I decided to purchase the series. OMG! What a great investment. I loved it and still do. Well developed characters that you can easily feel as though you "know" them. Sad to hear it will end in 2011, but I understand. It has had a good run. LOVE IT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Headlong Into Tragedy; Huge Improvement in Series September 2, 2010
This show took an abrupt turn for the better when we abruptly left the issue of Tommy's alcoholism to deal with the aftermath of last week's fire fight in the coffin factory where a pile of matter fell on a helmetless Damien. Here all along we've thought Tommy's alcoholism would cause something dreadful. But, as we saw last week, it was Lou's refusal to follow his doctor's orders to retire, which put his unit in mortal danger. He broke out a window because he couldn't breathe, which intensified the fire and imperiled everyone. Then Damien rushed back to see what was keeping the guys, while wearing no protective head gear. These firemen wear huge protective head gear with Tommy even sentimentally attached to his.

This episode is five months later with everyone still trying to cope with the grim aftermath of that night. I've never liked the girlfriend Sheila but she does a wonderful acting job in this episode. Tommy is doing what he does best, trying to rescue someone from a near hopeless situation. Lou is someone quite detestable as he has no remorse for causing great tragedy. His sole concern is keeping his doctor from retiring him.

This is the best episode of the whole season and I wish the whole season had spent more time on this kind of issue instead of on the alcoholism issue. The thing is that they are on unique territory with this newest material whereas with alcoholism there are many fine films which have won Oscars doing better jobs of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Alcoholism Saga Continues July 13, 2010
In episode two the show continues to develop its current dramatic arc, the worsening alcoholism of Tommy Galvin (Leary). It adds to this the alcoholism of his daughter. It also continues to develop his problems with his girlfriend and wife. (The girlfriend's character is someone who reminds me of screeching chalk on a blackboard. I couldn't run fast enough to get away from her.) Some viewers might like this story arc of worsening alcoholism and the constant struggle between wife and girlfriend. However, I am not one of them. Part of the problem is that Leary is covering territory already mastered by actors of far greater acting talent. For example, Nicholas Cage's Oscar winning performance as the alcoholic in LEAVING LAS VEGAS. Leary cannot compete with that kind of acting ability. What he should be emphasizing in his show is abilities that these better actors do not have, such as Leary's biting wit and comedic timing. I think Leary is an enormously talented man but those talents are not best used as an actor playing alcoholics and one end of a love triangle.

This DVD delivered on my expectations and then some. The only bad part about this DVD set is there were not anymore episodes to watch. If you enjoy Rescue Me, you should own this DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellence May 12, 2012
By Annette
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
My hubby loves the Rescue Me series and since we bought him the first four seasons for his Christmas present, we decided to finish off his collection for Father's Day and for our anniversary. Couldn't be happier with the service and quality of Amazon and their products and how quickly they ship to my home. It's so nice to get the same quality or better from Amazon that I have to pay so much more for in the stores and I don't have to leave home to do all my shopping. He has wanted this series for quite sometime however the prices in the stores for one season ran from $29.00 and up and to have the same product delivered to my home for a much cheaper price is something I will always love not to mention, I don'thave to use my gas, time, and deal with cranky salespeople because with Amazon, I can do it all right from my home when I want. The fact that I can place my order when everyone is sleeping or out and I'm not trying to hide things in a cart in a crowded store. Amazon is great with keeping my personal information personal and I have never had one problem with any services I have used. Great products at great prices and I dont' have to worry about returns if any because it's all well taken care of quickly and efficiently. Resuce me is a series that I've been able to buy because of the great prices and a gift that he didn't expect to get and will get. There are many series that we now own because we can afford to buy them all at once if we want and not have to pay what they expect you to pay in stores. Love you guys keep up the good work.
