Fontella Bass (born July 3, 1940) passed away yesterday; I feel terrible about it. Fontella was truly at her best with songs like "Rescue Me," a number she co-wrote with Raynard Miner and Carl William Smith. This song highlights just how well Fontella could sing. Her sophisticated phrasing, excellent diction and keen sense of timing make her 1965 hit "Rescue Me" a classic tune that people will recognize for quite some while to come.

Not everyone thought it was Fontella singing; some thought it was Aretha Franklin and others thought it might be Diana Ross and The Supremes! It just goes to show how talented Fontella really was--she was truly in that league and that says a lot. What a talented woman she was!

Fontella Bass will be sorely missed but she lives on through her music. I highly recommend the artistry of the great Fontella Bass.

The original of this Classic done my a very neat lady. LOVE IT - the very first time I heard song was in December of 65 - our first pass into the little town.An Ke, after we had finished the Pleiku Campaign. My squad was walking down the middle of the muddy street, with weapons un-slung, and looking at the 4 or 5 little bars trying to decide, which one? My M-79 man named Macio Small, Battle Creek MI, looked back to me and pointed to his left. I just shook my head OK. Remember it quite clear, still today. Must have made the owner play it 5 times. He had a small battery powered turn table/amp and a stack of 45s ..... and Irish "booze" made in Japan. Great Afternoon.

I'd give this song ten stars if I could. When it came out, I was a kid. We were all into the girl groups and girl singers like The Supremes and Mary Wells. Then along comes Fontella Bass and blasted us away with this song. We were all going around preening like we were singers. My sisters and I wanted to be The Supremes and since there was three of us, we played like that. Then when Fontella broke out with this, all the neighbor girls got together and sang it. Oh, yeah! Those were great times! Thank you for this song and being a part of my childhood memories. God Bless You. Rest in peace.

I bought this after MS Bass passed away. Her name was in the news and I heard a clip of this. Wanting to hear the whole song I went to my music files not to find. I thought that in my collections of different soul music from the 60's I would have it but did not. Went directly to Amazon and downloaded. I have been enjoying that beatiful voice ever since and reliving fond memories.

Perpetually wonderful record. Every note exquisitely integrated. Crystal clear, spine-tinglingly powerful voice. Honest emotion. All the ingredients of an enduring classic.
