A must read for pet lovers,
By Ell (Saint Cloud, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rescued: Saving Animals from Disaster (Paperback)
This book is so moving, I could only read a couple of pages at a time because I was brought to tears. There are great stories and words of advice in this book. If you have pets, you have a responsibility to read it. We should be thankful to those wonderful people who stepped up and helped our furry friends when no one else would. Why is it that animal well-being was not an issue until after the hurricane? Thanks goodness there is a change in the way animals are treated before/during/after a natural disaster or any other time that they need us to protect them.
Read this book.

An Amazing Resource,
By horsegirlK (Connecticut, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rescued: Saving Animals from Disaster (Paperback)
Rescued is an amazing resource for all animal lovers. Intermingled with personal stories from Katrina rescuers are facts and statistics about animal rescue and its effect on human nature. I was already a volunteer at my local shelter, but this book inspired me to do more. It also provided me with resources to find the appropriate instruction and training needed to be an asset, not a liability in the event of a disaster. This is recommended reading for all animal lovers.

A Wealth of Knowledge,
By Bobaloo (Kentucky) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rescued: Saving Animals from Disaster (Paperback)
As somone who was detailed to New Orleans in the hurricane aftermath and being a huge animal lover, I found this book very valuable. After seeing so many markings on the houses for animals that didn't make it, it gave me a sense of closure knowing that there were many who were saved and people there who made the animals a priority.
The book also paints a realistic picture of the steps you need to start NOW in order to be qualified to help after the next diaster and also how to prepare your own household for disasters that find their way on YOUR doorstep.

A Heart-Opening Must Read,
This review is from: Rescued: Saving Animals from Disaster (Paperback)
This is my second read of this beautiful yet gritty portrayal of how natural disasters (with major reference to Katrina) impact the lives of human-animal families. Heart-wrenching stories of pets left behind by rescued owners who were not allowed to bring them on boats, helicopters, etc. Heart-opening animal rescues, reunions and in many cases adoptions by new families.
"Rescued" is no sugar pill - it exposes the reality of the harsh fate of many animals during and after Katrina and offers real suggestions, recommendations, and insights into how to handle disasters like this in future. Above all, this is a book about the love between animals and humans and the extraordinary lengths this love will go to in extreme and sometimes life-threatening situations . It is a must-read for any pet-owner or animal-lover.

Saving Animals from Disaster,
By
This review is from: Rescued: Saving Animals from Disaster (Paperback)
This book deals with tragedy and hope. It concerns itself with professionals in the animal control business and others who volunteered to help and who found a new calling. It concerns itself with the mundane and heroism. As well, it provides recommendations for the average pet owner in case disaster strikes.

This book was very eye opening. I learned so much about what really happened to people and their pets. Some parts I would find myself smiling and in others I was fighting mad. Every doglover should read this book. It should motivate you to want to help in the next disaster.

Excellent,
This review is from: Rescued: Saving Animals from Disaster (Paperback)
Many people wanted to help animals after the hurricanes but didn't know how or where to start. Read what rescuers saw and experienced, what agencies responded. There are also moving pictures and stories about their experiences.
This book also introduces you to the tools YOU need to prepare yourself to help animals in future disasters (free online FEMA courses, training you could acquire now, groups you could join, supplies and equipment). Learn how to help not only your own pets but all animals in your community. I highly recommend this book. Don't let what happened in the Gulf happen in your community when a catastrophe strikes.

There's so much information in this book, you can hardly absorb it all the first time thru. I'll be reading it again soon! "One of the greatest ironies in the animal rescue efforts of 2005 is the fact that the people who feel the most distress at seeing animals suffer chose to experience that suffering firsthand." Because we had to do something about it!!!
I was there, and can really appreciate this book. It examines the volunteers & their experiences, why they came and what they encountered. It takes a look at the organizations, both national and grassroot, and how they helped or hampered. There are wonderfully emotional stories and compelling factual data (amounts of monies donated, numbers of animals impacted/rescued/reunited/perished, etc. It's a terrific review of what happenned to & for the animals of Katrina and the people that were directly involved. In addition to heartwarming stories of rescue and reunion, there's lots of good research, reference, analysis, compilation of information, and excellent suggestions for next time -- because, unfortunately, there will be a next time - and with the help of books like this one, we'll be more prepared.

Rescuing dogs,

This review is from: Rescued: Saving Animals from Disaster (Paperback)
Rescued is one of the best most informative books I have read in the last two years and I have 10,000 books. The book was worth the price just for the list of organizations in the back. However, after being in animal rescue for 9 years I learned a great deal reading the chapters on Katrina and the proper way to rescue and the improper way. Some people stayed to work at Katrina too long and suffered post traumatic stress syndrome and others came; saw the horrors of the disaster and left. I was so impressed by the woman who came in a wheel chair and stayed three weeks to help. MuttShacks philosophy was very close to ours at Animal Advocates of Moore County here in North Carolina. We are antishelter also and were very impressed with the rescue accomplishments of MuttShack. If you are a shelter worker or an animal lover, you must read this book. Maureen
