Book Description

Terrans Go Home!

The first interstellar expedition successfully reached Barnard's Star and its amazing double-planet - Rocheworld - and made contact with the flouwen, intelligent aquatic beings with a talent for higher mathematics and a love of surfing. The flouwen joined with the humans to explore the rest of Barnard's planets and moons. When a landing craft carrying ten humans and three flouwen crashlanded on a habitable moon - Eden - the team was marooned on Eden with no hope of rescue until decades later when a second expedition was scheduled from Earth.

Not having another option, the marooned explorers settled down to make the moon their home, befriending the indigenous inhabitants, exploring, learning to live off the land, and, most important, raising families. They struggled to survive natural disasters and unexpected attacks from the sea. The years passed.

A new generation grows up hearing of Earth and its technology as a dim legen, and thinking of Eden as their natural home.

When the Second Expedition finally arrives, its leader announces that he has orders to rescue all the survivors. But twenty-five years have passed. Who of the original members of the expedition will survive to see Earth again, and what new sort of human now waits on Eden to be...Rescued From Paradise?

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The fifth and apparently concluding volume of Rocheworld takes up the saga after the marooned expedition of 10 humans and 3 flouwen (i.e., aquatic sapients) has survived on the Rocheworld's habitable moon for a good many years. Now the second expedition from Earth, long in preparation, finally arrives, with strict orders to cart all humans back to their native planet. Problem is, Rocheworld humans feel they are already home and have no wish to leave. The ensuing conflict features plenty of action, much scientific ingenuity, and a good deal of wry wit. Forward and his various collaborators have always been well in the forefront among producers of readable hard sf, and this book continues their streak. Certainly no one who has followed the Rocheworld for four books will want to abandon it before finishing the fifth. Roland Green

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it., December 29, 2004

One of the better ones in the series. Complete with births, deaths, tidal waves, lava flows, specs on 2 new spaceship designs, a new alien race, learning to communicate with said race, and dealing with rescue/replacement after a long enough time for your kids to have kids. We even get a couple of chapters from the flowen perspective and another couple from the new alien perspective. Sounds packed? It is, but it wraps it all up well with a look at how humans might start using a whole new solar system.

Exactly that is what I got ordering this book. The service in itself was quick enough. However, I think it is not done to rob a book from its cover! Without that, the book loses some of its appeal, besides the tearing off of the cover being an act of vandalism.
With the cover attached, the rating would have been the full five stars.
