For any parent who thinks or knows their child has depression, there is no better source of information than this book. We found our son described on nearly every page. It helped us to understand the problem. More importantly, it helped us to learn how to help him. Reading this book makes me want to devote the rest of my life to helping parents in this situation.

This book can help save a life. As his son, I attest Dr. Berlinger explains depression in frank terms that both professionals and parents can understand and follow. Any parent who wishes to get a better grasp on their child's symptoms will be directed towards reality. I am living proof that this book works.

This was one of the best written books ever for parents of depressed teens. I read it quickly, was able to identify with the author's experiences and it helped me understand the nuances of the depressive disorder that no doctor has provided us. It truly is from a parent's perspective while his medical knowledge gives him the credentials to make thoughtful comments on coping with the disease and the behaviors while raising a well adjusted young person. Highly recommended to the parents and grandparents of a depressed teen. Counselors and psychiatric professionals could learn from this as well.

As a parent I found the book very helpful at helping me sort of moodiness from actual depression. It also helped me to form a concrete plan with my child to help him through this challenging time - and to help my child to appreciate the strengths that they have. It is still a long and challenging journey, but it is less difficult with this tool

This is one of the most helpful resources I've found. There is a lot of information available on how to identify depression but not much on what we all want to do: help our adolescent. There is good, concrete information here on what to do and what to say.

I'd have given it 5 stars except for one thing that really rankled. The author mentions that as his son gave up his good friends during the depths of his depression, he purposely sought out what he felt to be the low-status kids as companions. Okay, that's honest. However Dr. Berlinger goes on to thank his lucky stars that Eric didn't choose the freaks or the goths as friends. That is either tone deaf or simply lacking in all compassion. Every one of those kids is someone's child, is loved by a parent who may be losing as much sleep as the author did during his son's difficult time, and may in fact be a depressed teenager as well. I found the sentiment surprising in an otherwise excellent book.

Excellent source of knowledge and support for parents and those who care about teenagers who are/might be experiencing depression.
As I psychologist , I could have been recommending this to many adults, which is actually what I am doing now, having discovered and read this book.
