Book Description

"Creswell's Research Design is an accessible and useful book that stimulates students through walk through experiences, use of exercises, and production of actual writing samples. It is a book that models the types of issues that best suit different approaches and allows students to understand when to use mixed methods. Furthermore, its focus on theory and paradigms is done in a way that helps students decode their meaning."
-MARTHA MONTERO-SIEBURTH, University of Massachusetts, Boston

New to the Second Edition:

  • Because mixed methods research has come into its own since the publication of the first edition, every chapter now shows how to implement a mixed methods design in your proposal or plan as well as showing how to implement qualitative and quantitative approaches
  • Ethical issues that may arise in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods designs have been added to a new section in Chapter 3
  • Writing tips and considerations have been expanded and moved to the first part of the book to get your research plan started in the right direction
  • The latest developments in qualitative inquiry, including advocacy, participatory, and emancipatory approaches have been added to Chapter 10
  • Mixed methods procedures (Chapter 11) show readers how to identify types of mixed methods strategy, select data collection and analysis approaches, and plan the overall structure of the study

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It is both usefully expanded and very reader friendly. The book has a distinctive helpful tone and an almost "how to do it" style. If one liked the first edition, then he or she will probably adore this one." (Organizational Research Methods )

"The success of mixed methods is particularly noticeable in medical and health-related research: in order to secure funding, it is advisable to incorporate a quantitative element into any such research project, and from the point of view of working with human subjects, most qualitative researchers would argue that a qualitative element is required."  -Alison Scott-Baumann, University of Gloucestershire (Alison Scott-Baumann )

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Creswell (2003) - Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches, September 12, 2005
As a doctoral student preparing to write my dissertation proposal, this book has been an invaluable asset. The book is clearly written and contains information and suggestions that I would think would be helpful to students working on academic proposals as well as to researchers working on proposals for journal articles. I first read the book in its entirety, and I am now going back through the book taking notes and applying Creswell's (2003) concepts to my own research topic. I especially appreciate Creswell's (2003) description of the mixed methods approach as that is the research strategy I am considering. I would encourage any student or researcher to add this book to his or her library!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for graduate students, November 24, 2005
I've thoroughly enjoyed (and learned from!) this book, even though research design is something I know well. In fact, as I was reading it I kept nodding my head in agreement with Creswell's statments, as many of the issues he raises are the same as those I struggled with during my time as a graduate student (and without such a wonderful resource). Having access to this treasure early in my dissertation phase would have saved me a lot of time and effort.

I find that the book is also very helpful in the design of research methodology courses, as the way it is structured illuminates many relationships and ideas that can help students in any collegiate course learn.

The people who are giving it low rating seem more offended by its "orientation" than by its effectiveness at guiding one through the research design process and thus have resorted to childish personal attacks on the author. I personally did not have a problem with any of the examples in the book. They did not distract me in the least.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Grad Students!, August 26, 2005
I am a grad student in the midst of writing my doctoral dissertation. Creswell has written an excellent guide for theses and dissertation preparation. What makes this book so relevant is the attention to qualitative, quantitative, and MIXED methodology. I am in education, which is an arena where qualitative and mixed methods are being used and accepted more. The format is easy to follow and not as "technical" as Campbell & Stanley, but now watered-down. I especially liked the additional book recommendations - I even bought a few of them to use as references for my dissertation and as valuable additions to my professional library. I highly suggest that anyone preparing a thesis, dissertation, or research article add the book to their library also.
