The new edition of this market-leading textbook has been updated and revised to embrace current developments in this area of psychology. It remains a comprehensive survey of research methods in psychology today, with clear and detailed explanations of statistical concepts and data analysis. It also covers the full range of experimental and non-experimental methods and explores the ongoing quantitative-qualitative debate among researchers. It reexamines issues surrounding validity--including confounds, quasi, field, and non-experiments, and includes a new section on ethnographic methods.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The new edition of Coolican's book is impressively wide-ranging. It introduces quantitative and qualitative research methods and guides the reader through the research process from the initial identification and formulation of a research question to the preparation of the final report. The style of presentation is informal and appropriate for A'level students and those in the early years of a psychology degree. -- The Psychologist 20041001 "The new edition updates his support to lecturing on a wide range of approaches to psychological research, as specified for the undegraduate curriculum by the British Psychological Society (BPS) in recent years ... The book is replete with interesting and often important published examples." -- David Booth, Neuroimaging in Psychology 20041001

I have taught statistics and research methods all around the globe, I have searched high and low for a textbook that will make the world of statistics a more friendly one for my apprehensive students.

Well - this is the one. It's well written - sets a high standard yet does so with ease and reader friendly arrangement of information, examples and calculation manuals.

There's a newer version out which is as reccommended as this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough yet smooth intro into Psych Methods & Stats, September 25, 2010

I looked through several statistics book for psychology, before settling on this one. Though I havent quite made it all the way through, I am very pleased with this choice. I bought the book in order to self-learn stats specific to psych, as well as to refresh general science methodology and terminology. This is very accessible, starting with a general overview of science methodology and experimental design, and carrying through into ANOVAs and regression analysis. Attempts at humor lighten the endeavor without being distracting or obnoxious. Recommended and would buy again.
