Editorial Reviews

Review

"Tensen’s Research Strategies for a Digital Age will fill an important niche in the college composition classroom. Although many writing handbooks have sections devoted to the research paper, none details electronic research with Tensen’s precision and clarity while maintaining a style and tone that will be effective with lower-division college students. She makes the process sound easy and even fun. . ."

". . . this will be a useful, direct approach to researching for beginning college students. I like the informal tone, using ’I’ and ’you’. I think students will respond positively to that tone."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for college research, November 2, 2010

I just started using this book for a library research class I'm taking at my local community college. I wish I would've had this on my first day of English Comp. I am an older student (55) returning to college and this is an invaluable resource to navigate this new way of researching in our digital age, as implied by the title. The first chapter was worth the price as it gave helpful ways to do an essay paper. The author gives examples that make the research lessons much easier for me to grasp. For instance, she compares solving a crime and gathering information to research in which you need to gather the essential information from sources for your topic. Criminal investigations narrow down good leads, just as you need to narrow down good leads for the direction of your research. I have found that by taking the time to do what I'm learning from this book, will actually save me time and frustration for the end product.

Within the chapters there are highlighted boxes that have summarized information. The Quick Checks are blocks throughout the chapters that summarize the information that you just read. I like the QC's because they give the main points, just like my own notes would. There are also "e-TIPS" that give information about particular ways that will be useful for computer research. This book will help you to develop research skills that will be helpful for even personal use when you want to discover information about your topic of interest.

I bought two copies, one for me and one to send to my daughter who is doing online college courses. As a side note, I highly recommend taking a library research class if your college offers it because it will open your eyes to all that is available to you. Not only for class assignments, but for anything of interest to you that you'd like to know more about.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive for citing techniques, October 21, 2010

This is a great book for research citing in different formats...and it's up to date too. I'm using it in a college LibrarySkills class for English, and it's very useful for understanding different styles of citation.

It also explains how to approach a topic in an advanced way: instead of looking for sources that just agree with you and using those as backup to your argument, this shows you how to use your research to say something new and more individual.

The spiral binding is a really big deal, as silly as that may sound. Having it lie flat while you work is helpful, because much of the time you really have to pay attention to the spacing, details, etc in citing sources.

It also gives you some great links for finding research that are not the typical Google searches.
