Buy this DVD. While Resevoir Dogs is okay in my opinion. Bad Lieutenant is GREAT. Harvey Keitel is a detective on dope, liquor, cocaine etc. Strung out man! This is his best role,I think. Just watch how he shoots the car stereo when his baseball team looses! Priceless! "Get back! Police activity!" We actually get an inside look at how some cops "changed" through the hard times and violence of a big city and turned crooked. This movie IS based on real time scenarios or situations. They dont make cop movies like this anymore.........I could go on and on about this film but you haveto really check it out for yourself to believe. If you enjoyed "Serpico" you'll like "Bad Lieutenant" also.

Both are raw, stark, graphic, brutal portrayals of very nasty characters! Fantastic movies...but not for everybody!,

These are both very intense, graphic, very real views of some slimy characters. They make a tremendous double-feature! Harvey Kietel (the common link between these flicks) is absolutely supurb in both roles. He makes a great scumbag! "Bad Lieutenant" I'd seen before, and was my main reason for this purchase. Harvey plays a dirty cop who is investigating the rape of a nun. His character has a gambling problem, a coke (and other drugs) problem, he's into sex, and does a lot of things no decent cop will do. He abuses his authority in ways that shock you, and all of it is portrayed openly in graphic, vivid detail. I'd never seen "Reservoir Dogs" before, but was interested because of the recommendations of friends. I'd heard it was about a robbery that was supposed to be the perfect crime, but went terribly wrong. I expected the run-of-the-mill bank hold-up where the cops show up, robbers take hostages and contemplate shooting their way out sort of thing. It was nothing like that! The actual crime (a jewelry store heist aimed at a particular incoming shipment) is never shown. Instead, the movie dances back and forth showing scenes before the heist (such as when the main organizer brings all the strangers together to explain the plan) and scenes after the perpetrators shot their way out, escaped and had to figure out how to save the situation while arguing about who in their group may have set them up. Both movies are brilliantly written, raw, graphic, portrayals of very slimy characters. Harvey K., while playing a dirtball in both flicks, shows more redeeming qualities as a robber in RD than he does as a cop in BL. These movies are not for general audiences, or the faint of heart.......they are very graphic!!! But, if you like raw portayals of dirty characters, then like me, you will find both of these movies quickly becoming all-time favorites!
