3.0 out of 5 stars Overhyped
There's a significant graphical overhaul since episode 1, but this fails to improve on or even to equal the original in any other respect. As a game in its own right, its pretty entertaining, if slightly short, but as a sequel to one of the most innovative and ingenious games of all time, its a disappointment of the highest order.

STORYLINE: Resident evil 2 places you into the boots of Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield (your choice), who after arriving into Raccoon City realize that its infested with man eating zombies, giant spiders, and other things you can't even imagine. Unfortunately, simply driving out of the town in a car will not cut it, so you'll have to guide 'em through such places as research facilities and police stations to find an alternate escape. Along the way you'll discover the story behind all the chaos and come across many plot twists, and you'll meet some nice, and others bizzare, characters along the way.
PROS: This games replay value is off the charts. There are so many hidden features (two hidden characters, and an alternate scenario for the two main characters) that you won't want to drop this game for a very long time. The action and suspense levels are also mind blowing, as you tackle down hordes of the zombies and much worse enemies with pistols, grenade launchers, and magnums. Graphics, control, and sound all hit the bullseye with this game.
CONS: Voice acting is absolutely horrible. Each characters voice is monotone and has no feeling behind it. Though it hurts the game, its not so effective that you hate the game; its only a minor, minor problem.
OVERALL: a must have game if you are a Playstation owner. The storyline and gameplay makes Resident Evil 2 one of the best PSone games to own.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is by far my Favorite Game!!, November 18, 2000

If you are thinking of buying this game, do not hesitate... I have played this game all the way through twice, and I am about ready for another go at it. When my husband first bought it, I thought, "Oh great, just another shoot 'em up game." Then I started watching him play, and I got so into it that I couldn't wait for it to be my turn. The replay value is great, and I guarantee that this game will not let you down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Addicting Horror Game, December 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Resident Evil 2 (Video Game)
Is it a movie or a video game? Try both and they suceed fairly well. So well, that it will keep you in front of the TV screen for hours on end, trying to reach the end. Breaks will be brief, only as long as it takes the paramedics to restart your heart after a particularly terrifying scene.

The opening computer generated opening is well done and tense, creating an atmosphere of horror as the dead literally rise up to attack you. Hollywood should take note. From there music, camera angles, and surprise manipulate the player as do cinematic cut scenes that allow you to know the character you play and care what occurs to them.

With only a thin sheen of realism (would there really be such strange puzzles?) the game involves the players in a storyline that is told through his or her actions, cut scenes, and printed information. The pacing is tense with surprises all abound right up to the ending.

What makes this game work so well is its attempt at depth. Not only can you play as two different characters with somewhat different storylines, beating these games open up alternative versions or "B" games. These B games are even better as you are stalked by a mysterious and indestructible Mr. X. Never knowing when he may appear allows you to replay the game again (with some differences) and not get bored.

All told, the game is highly satisfying. Though there are minor quibbles with inventory (a discard command to set down an item would work SO well) and a too difficult final battle in the B game, they do not detract from the game. Told as a movie, with moving scenes, it sets a new standard for gaming excellence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can This Game Be Any More Fun?, March 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Resident Evil 2 (Video Game)
Resident Evil 2 for the PlayStation is one of the most impressive games. The graphics are superb and the plot is fantastic. If you feel like you're torn between playing a puzzle game and shooting things than there is no doubt that this game is for you. The Resident Evil series incorporates puzzles into the horror genre. If you played the original Resident Evil and loved it baby you'd better pick this one up. If you haven't played the original then you should give this game a try it is worth at least a rent for everyone. Be sure to watch all of Capcom's beautiful Full Motion Video sequences, the only thing that can be said, Breathtaking. Kill a few zombies for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Screams Go On, December 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Resident Evil 2 (Video Game)
OK. It may lack overall spookiness, and the city doesn't seem as maze-like as the mansion in the first one, but man, it still rocks. Graphics have been pumped up, and the background scenes are simply superb. The FMV is amazing too. The new weapons and characters are also great. Thankfully, they improved the voice acting, and the characters conversations are more beliveable. The zombies are still blood-chilling, and they look different. Some are cops, S.T.A.R.S. troops, and civilians(well, they were, anyway). The best part is the way you have to beat the game using one character, save it, then use that saved file for the other character to get the whole story. Nifty! Anyway, if you liked R.E., buy this. If the first 10 seconds of the intro film doesn't grab you, maybe you are a zombie yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's gross, it's gory, it's scary, it's GREAT!, December 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Resident Evil 2 (Video Game)
This was a really good game. I can honestly say that it was one of the best games I have ever played. The best parts about this game were - the zombies were realistic the main monsters (William and Mr. X)were awesome! The weapons were outstanding!

The only part that turned me off was the fact that you don't get a lot of space in your inventory to carry a lot of items. All I can say is that this game is a "must have" for people who don't have it yet! You won't regret it, I promise!

4.0 out of 5 stars maybe the best adult/older teen game for the playstation, November 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Resident Evil 2 (Video Game)
It takes some time to get used to the coltrols but once you do you are treated to hours of gaming enjoyment. The story will engulf you, the suspence will startle you and when you finish the first disc you get to play again on disc two with just enough changes to keep the game intresting. You may actually enjoy the second disc more than the first because you will be used to the environment. If you are not an experienced gamer it would be a good idea to pick up a game guide to help you out along the way. Overall Resident Evil 2 may be the best adult/older teen game for playstation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs WAY UP for Resident Evil 2!, June 15, 2001

Dallas Bohannon (Raleigh, North Carolina (USA)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Resident Evil 2 (Video Game)
Hi, everybody! I am just going to talk and say that Resident Evil 2 is one of the best games out there, and in my opinion, it's even better that Nemesis! I guess it is because of the gameplay, and how there are two disks total in the set! And it is also so cool how you can also just pop in the 1st or 2nd disk and can play with either Leon or Claire in the very beginning! And with this copy, the Dual Shock edition, there is an Arrange mode, where you can start off with 3 HUGE weapons with unlimited ammo! They even start you off with a rocket launcher! How cool is that? It is just so fun to see the zombie's body parts blow up all over the place! To me, the best handgun is the Magnum, especially in the end, when you can get the added part to it to make it even stronger! It's cool, because when you shoot Zombies, it automatically aims for thier heads!

The main boss in this game is William, who is a man who made the G-Virus. These people from Umbrella tried to take itfrom him and when he moved, they shot at him! Then when he was on the ground, they took the sample and left. He then took the G-Virus and drank it! The people from Umbrella then get slaughtered to death by the mutated William! And now, he's after Leon and Claire! It's up to you to save Racoon City and the survivors (if there are any)! Destroy the zombies and William and you will be joyful about finishing this wonderful game, wanting to play it over and over again! Trust me, it is definately worth buying! No matter what the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars My introduction to survival horror., January 27, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resident Evil 2 (Video Game)
RE2 was my first zombie game and......I fell in love with this franchise right off the bat.
I grew up on a steady diet of Sega Genesis games then I went to the N64 and my love of all things Mario.
Then I finally broke down and got a PS2.
RE2 was one of the first games I got for the system and it completely changed my outlook on games forever.

I had never played such an adult oriented game. Not even Mortal Kombat came close to how "R" rated this game was.
I was blown away.
Incredible graphics for the time.
Constants scares.
Interesting puzzles that really didn't make any sense and still don't LOL.
Who cares, they were still a blast to solve anyway.
A story line that rivaled the best Hollywood has ever thrown at us regarding the horror genre.

I'm not going to go into complaints now as the game is rather old.
Did I have complaints at the time?
Only one.......the characters control like a walking tank.
All of this was corrected by RE4 but that's about it for my complaints.

One of the most influential games ever made.
It brought adult gaming into the mainstream and proved that not all games have to have cute mascots. (I still love my Mario and Sonic mind you.)
Excellence.
Perfect in almost every way imaginable.
A must play.
Highest recommendations.
