2.0 out of 5 stars Win XP is a problem
It doesnt seem to work on XP but works fine on ME and below. I just Think it's too slow to change views and not a hard core FPS game. But good to waste time while not doing something important.

4.0 out of 5 stars "He has been fatally wounded by zombies." No kidding!, November 10, 2005
This review is from: Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (CD-ROM)
Resident Evil 3: NEMESIS was a welcome addition to the hugely successful and apparently never-ending RE franchise unleashed in the later 1990s. By using a simple but strong formula which combined the two genres of horror and action, used third rather than first person perspective for the characters and dealt out liberal doses of gore while also challenging the player to use his head, Capcom literally created a monster. As proof of this I reference an argument I once in witnessed in a local bar between four or five grown men over whether the submachine gun, Magnum or Mossberg 12-gauge was most effective for one-shot stops of Umbrella's failed science projects, the zombies.

Capcom released NEMESIS a few years back to tide-over the fans who were grumbling for the always coming but seemingly never arriving sequel to RE: 2. Some were confused and thought NEMESIS was the sequel, not realizing it is more of a companion volume: Its events take place more or less simultaneously with those of RE: 2, and in some of the same places. It is therefore not so much an advancement of the complex RE storyline as an extended side-trip, but it is still well worth your time. I still break this bad boy out every blue moon on my trusty old PC.

NEMESIS opens "in media res" with ex-cop heroine Jill Valentine running for her life amidst the burning ruins of downtown Racoon City. As we all know, the villainous Umbrella Corporation unleashed its deadly mutagenic virus in the city, turning 90% of the city into flesh-eating zombies and the other 10% into a buffet. Jill's master plan is the same as every other RE hero: to get the hell out of Dodge. Unfortunately for her, and you, that is a lot harder than it sounds. The police have been basically wiped out and your only friends are the survivors of an Umbrella special-ops squad, some of whom turn out to be the kind of pals you could really do without.

NEMESIS is similar to the other RE games in that it combines the now-familiar themes of A) finding various useful objects and weapons scattered around the city and putting them to use B) fending off zombines and other disgusting lab projects brought to you courtesy of Umbrella C) solving puzzles which range from "how freaking dumb do you think I am?" to "if I don't figure out this stupid water puzzle soon, I'm gonna put my foot in the television!" all amidst a lot of creepy music and spooky sound effects. The main difference is the presence of the Nemesis, a nasty piece of work who appears about a quarter of the way through the game and truly earns his nickname. He's yet another Umbrella sci-fi project gone bad, and his only purpose in life is to kill STARS members, which means you. He's reminiscent of the Tyrant guys you fought in RE: 2, but virtually indestructible and much, much faster. Believe me when I tell you will hate this SOB more than your landlord, ex-girlfriend and noisy neighbor combined. He could give persistence lessons to the Terminator.

NEMESIS boasts a few gimmicks to spice up the action, including a playable sidekick character from Umbrealla's mercenary army named Carlos Olivera, and a "choose your response" function which allows the player to determine different outcomes to the game. Since many of the outcomes are radically different from others, it's the sort of gimmick that makes you want to go back and play again.

NEMESIS isn't a perfect game. For one thing, the speed of the "inventory" screen is agonizingly slow and the fonts, which look very bad, also roll out like they're covered in molasses (try holding down the space bar to make 'em move faster). The auto-aiming feature they've added since RE: 2 is more harmful than helpful, since the computer has a nasty habit of auto-aiming at targets which are a lot less threatening than the one standing right in front of you, and the inability to save the game except at a few selected points can be pretty frustrating. And as in all the RE games, you spend way too much time running around over vast distances; forgetting the lighter or that stupid lockpick can cost you boring minutes of running through screens you've already been through 8 times before. In some ways the playability of the game is actually lower than that of RE: 2, and I've also heard that the game will not save if you try to play it on anything more advanced than Windows 98. Be warned.

All that aside, it's still a good game and you can buy it for your PC for practically peanuts. I used to play it at work all the time with the sound off (thank God for privacy screens!) Call me a sick tool (many have), but there's something about blowing a zombie's head off with a shotgun that just brings a smile to my face :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game...with a few new features, October 21, 2001
By
This review is from: Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (CD-ROM)
What impressed me about RE3 was the few new concepts that sort of distinguished itself from the previous RE's. The first thing was that this game kept you nervous. Once you thought you were safe from those monsters, that Nemesis pops up and keeps chasing you around...a real adrenaline pumper. Up to the end you're thinking, "My god! He's still alive!" There's another little feature that's kind of like a "decision-making" concept, where you actually are given a choice of what your next move is (like multiple choice)...to me it's ridiculous, but it is different.

One minor detail, though, that sort of...well, it didn't bother me, but just kind of made me think how ridiculous the RE3 artists' minds were when they designed Jill Valentine in this series. I mean here's an ex-cop who used to be on an elite force unit, who is now in the middle of a zombie-infested town full of blood and gore, running around in a mini skirt and a tank top or whatever you call those kind of tight shirts. I just kept thinking, "Oh, Lord...they may as well ... made her wear high heels." Come on...let's not cheapen the image of the mighty hero ofRE1 by making her look like a ditzy bar waitress.

5.0 out of 5 stars S.T.A.R.S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, April 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (CD-ROM)
When I played Resident Evil 2, I thought that the big tall guy in that was a pest and very hard to beat, but Nemesis makes him look like Steve Urkel. I must say that Resident Evil 3 is much more challenging than the previous one. One warning that they should have on this game is: People with heart conditions should not play this game. This game will scare your socks off. The graphics and sound effects are spectacular and the music is spooktacular. This is the best RE game I have played yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Scariest Game for the Playstation!!!!!, September 14, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (CD-ROM)
This has got to be the scariest game I have ever played! I have let go over the controller some many times I can't even count them. The controlls are a little hard to master but if you have ever played the first or second one it will be easy. The graphics are ok, especially when the movies appear, and the plot is alright. The majior plot is to escape from this little town but when you do the zombies attack. There is this one huge "bad zombie" who chases you all around, Nemisis. He is really scary and you can run into him at any point during the game, except for the first ten minutes! There is a lot of scary moments and I wouldn't recomend this game for small kids. It is really hard, scary, but very very fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yummie Zombie Goodness, November 16, 2007
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (CD-ROM)
I finished this one years ago and it's great to run through it again (with graphics maxed on my PC). I need to download virtual PC so I can revisit more classic 98 games like RE and RE2. A must-have for any post-apocalyptic collection (reminds me... I have to resupply the bunker...)

4.0 out of 5 stars NnyCW for Capcom City, May 29, 2005

This review is from: Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (CD-ROM)
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis adds a nice touch to the Resident Evil formula. Not only do you have to deal with oncoming hordes of zombies, but now you have another worry...being chased by a Nemesis that will come after you no matter what you do to try and stop it. The addition of Nemesis made this game one of the most enjoyable, and my favorite of the Resident Evil\'s. The addition to now be able to walk up stairs without pressing a button really did help way back when, though wondering how that was ever not a feature in the games is a bit of a puzzlement. And on the subject of puzzles, the only flaw this game has is the \"water puzzle\" near the end of the game. Only because it is totally random. Meaning you can get lucky and solve it in 20 seconds, or it could take about 30 minutes to beat. But other than that, this is a great game that any Resident Evil fan should have in their collection. NnyCW for CapCity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as meaty as RE 2, but still a great game, October 21, 2011

This review is from: Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (CD-ROM)
I ran this game in XP, with compatibility for '98 activated and the in-game option for texture correction unchecked. Once I followed these couple of simple steps, the game looked great. You can actually see what some of the pictures are that adorn the walls of this terror-beseiged city. One interesting thing about the PC version is that all costumes are unlocked from the beginning. That way you can go straight to Jill's Special 7 costume without being a Resident Evil master. The other thing I noticed about the PC version is that enemies appear in places they didn't in the Playstation version. I also got a new scenario with Tyrell and Nicolai that I've never seen before. Overall, the game looks great and plays fine. The primary benefits over the Playstation version are the improved graphics and the fact that all costumes are available from the beginning. However, the graphical improvements do not apply to the item menu. That still looks fuzzy, like it was ported directly from the PSX. And just remember, if you see weird lines across the background graphics, toggle Texture Correction on or off. That fixed the problem for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Heart-Touching, Beautiful, September 5, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (CD-ROM)
I bet the title of this review surprised a hell lot of you, didn't it? How could a survival horror that contains "explicit scenes of violence and gore" be beautiful and heart-touching? Simple.

You gotta watch the story. Watch all the cut-scenes and FMVs(full motion videos). Good English understanding is vital to enjoying Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Don't skip any of them. If you do, the game will make no sense. For me it wouldn't, that is.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis varies between times of horror and times of semi-peace. Fights with Nemesis and some fast monsters contain a helluva lot of action. Zombies, on the other hand, are very slow & weak and quite fun to kill. Relaxing compared to Nemesis :p

This isn't a shooter game. No mouse aiming whatsoever. No cross-hair. Just a 3D character set in 2D textures that look like 3D, but they are really not. It's 2008, I have quite a good PC, but I still LOVE this game.

Oh yeah, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis isn't very scary. Sometimes you WILL get shocked, but it's not like Doom 3 or anything. This game is a lot about role-playing. You gotta FEEL what the Jill & Carlos are experiencing.

THEN you will come to love this game and will want to play it even after you have beaten it.
