I had a PS3 briefly and RE5 was one of the games I really liked on it, but I think the PC version is the best. Any PC gamer will know there is just no comparison with the better accuracy you get with a mouse and keyboard versus a gamepad. Much more precise shooting, this is especially evident in the fast paced mercenaries mode. The game overall is pretty fun but my one complaint is that the story mode is a little short, compared to RE4 at least. Though the mercenaries mode hugely makes up for it with replay value (unlike older RE titles where I would only replay once in a blue moon). Its intense, addictive and incredibly fun - one of the best additions and modes to RE. Nothing like getting attacked by hordes of zombies and having a huge arsenal of weapons to fend them off..! Also in the PC version they added a new No Mercy mode with even larger swarms and it is absolutely nuts. Mercenaries is a blast and a MUST PLAY for all RE fans. Finally, the graphics look slightly better than the console version. You can make out a bit more detail in the PC version and it sure looks pretty. All in all I will say RE5 is right up there with RE2 and 4 as my favorites in the series. There seems to be a lot of negative reviews out there because the old RE survival horror style was abandoned. But I think the reverse would happen if they continued the same formula, there would be the "seen it, done that before" complaints. Personally I lovedd the new fresh direction RE4 took and RE5 just builds on that with more enemies and weapon upgrades.

Let me start by mentioning I'm old enough that I played the original Resident Evil when it was a newly released PlayStation (I) game. I've played all of the noteworthy RE versions (i.e. Zero, RE1, 2, 3, Code Veronica, and 4). The graphics for RE 5 (PC version) are incredible. A number of reviews mention that this port is better than the game consoles. I can see why. The game has a decent fun factor, but here's the problem: it isn't Resident Evil in the survival horror tradition established by all the previous versions, including 4. With RE 4 the franchise did head in a new direction, finding a niche between the original RE games with the adventure/puzzle solving aspect, and the more common first person shooters that are basically shoot 'em and move on. I loved RE 4. It perfectly captured the best of both worlds. Apparently Capcom decided that the natural evolution was to move RE further into the FPS domain. Well, they succeeded. I'm no longer playing an RE game--I'm playing a shooter that is otherwise just like all the other FPS games, except that it's not a first person perspective, it's third person. There is no real story here like you came to expect in the early RE games. Really there isn't any story at all--just a continuation of RE 4's storyline, but without the logic puzzles and adventure aspect from the early games that RE 4 had managed to retain. There's lots of non-stop shooting--and no story worth mentioning. So if you want a really great FPS that is actually a 3rd person shooter with great graphics that is made by Capcom, this game should be perfect for you. IMHO, Capcom should have stuck with the RE 4 formula. RE 5 is a fun game, but not the traditional Resident Evil I have been seriously addicted to in the past. I could have survived without this one...

UPDATE (Feb. 2010) - I was about half way through the game when I wrote my review above. I take back what I said about RE 5 not having a story. It's kind of a sequel to RE 4, and has references to things that have occurred throughout the series. I give it a 4 out of 5 on the story. Also, despite the fact that RE 5 is not in the same style as the traditional Resident Evil games, I've ended up being as addicted to this one as any of the previous renditions. Actually, I can't stop playing. This is a real problem. I probably need psychological help...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sets the standard for console to PC ports, September 20, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resident Evil 5 (DVD-ROM)
Gameplay - Solid action game, the puzzles of earlier RE games are gone. The focus is entirely on action, and it's a good change. The RE puzzles have always been easy, just a series of "Do I remember where I saw the X shaped keyhole before?". If you're only playing single player, I'd say pass and get another game. If you have a friend to play with, definitely pick this up. This is what Left 4 Dead should have been.

Sound/Music - Solid, though the volume seems a little low to me.

Controls - Mouse aiming, MUCH better than the port of Resident Evil 4. You still have to stand still to shoot, but fans of the series should be used to this by now.

Online play - The co-op main campaign is amazing, other modes are all right... but if you aren't interested in the main campaign, you're better off just purchasing Left 4 Dead for a zombie slaughter fest. One thing I must note - you can NOT communicate with keyboard, communication MUST be through microphone which is somewhat of a disappointment (I find a lot of people don't have mics or are too shy to talk).

Overall - Game runs great on even some low end PCs. Kudos to Capcom. Great game for multiplayer, but if you're just looking for single player I'd suggest waiting for the price to drop a bit.

5.0 out of 5 stars No other options, then why not., December 8, 2010

I have played Resident Evil 5 on both PC and Xbox 360. Between the two if you have both systems avaliable to you, get the 360 version and here is why.

Xbox 360:
Pros:
1. Easy for those who have difficulty playing with a keyboard and mouse.
2. Released DLC that was not released for the PC version

Cons:
1. Missing one mode for Mercenaries mode that was released for PC "No Mercy"
2. Inventory is a pain with only four quick swap buttons on the d-pad.
3. DLC has to be downloaded offline (Only comes with a ticket for download of all DLC)

PC:
Pros:
1. Much easier to target enemies with the recticule instead of a laser sight.
2. Movements have become ever so slightly less tank-like.

Cons:
1. Lacks the DLC of both 360 and PS3
2. Requires logging onto Windows Live to play with your account.
3. No split screen.

The beginning idea:
Chris Redfield is sent to Africa to try and capture the terrorist Irving with his new partner Sheva Alomar. Like most games it is never that easy and both protaganists run into problems while on the way to the transaction point between Alpha Team and Irving.

If you only have a PC then I would recommend this for any Resident Evil fan. For a stretch I would also recommend to new players to the franchise, but if the option is there, get the Xbox 360 or PS3 Gold Edition of the game.

For what is given as a basic game (before the two platforms got DLC) this has more original content such as one new outfit only on PC for Chris and Sheva. "No Mercy" mode in Mercenaries, even with the DLC is not avaliable on the 360 or PS3 version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great game from capcom, October 6, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resident Evil 5 (DVD-ROM)
As a resident evil fan I found this as a great sucess, some people might say they just want the old fashioned resident evil that's more a survival game than an action game but come on, after playing res evil 0,1,2,3: Nemesis, Code Veronica and the outbreak series, this franchise needed a radical change and the results are res evil 4 (gamecube version) and 5 which I think both are great games. Thanks to these changes now we can aim and shoot, that's an improve considering zombies (monsters, etc) and B.O.W's weak spots. Ok now I'll start talking about resident evil 5, the game campaign is great, now the guns have real names, you can play campaign mode with a partner online, the cinematics are just sick and they kept a lot of features we first saw in resident evil 4, like the mix of cinematic and gameplay moments, gather treasures and gold to earn new equipment and a long list of cool things you can do.
Now I've found some bad reviews of this game, some complaining about the 3rd person view, others about the controls and others complaining the fact that you can't shoot and run. First of all, there's something called videos, you can see gameplay videos (I can give a long list of sites with these kind of videos), we had the chance of downloading a benchmark tool so you can see how the game work in your system and what in earth have you been people? I mean have you ever heard of resident evil 4? It's the same gameplay style and that's what makes this series so great. So stop whining and next time do a research and read the game features, gameplay style and make sure of what you want, stop making pointless reviews, I mean everyone have the right to give their opinion but come one stop being so retarded and make sure what are you buying. I've played a lot of games and I found this game a success. My only complain is the lack of more characters in the mercenaries mini-game and at some points you might want to kill your partner when is controlled by AI, sometimes is a wonderful support and some other times is annoying, the key is know when to order to attack and when to order to cover. PD: Sorry my awkward english.

EDIT: Forgot to describe my computer specs. I was amazed of how good this game run in my computer considering the low specs. Intel Core 2 Duo 4300 @1.80 GHZ, 1 gig ram, Creative Sound Blaster Audigy, Xfx geforce 8600 gt xxx 256mb ddr3, windows xp pro sp3. I'm running this game with low resolution (800x600) but all other settings on high, no problems at all and running smooth.

Regards

RAF (Houghton, Michigan) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Resident Evil 5 (DVD-ROM)
Resident Evil 5 is the sequel to the hit game Resident Evil 4. Unfortunately, Resident Evil 5 lacks almost everything that made RE4 a good game in the first place: interesting characters, a lot of well done boss battles, decent plot, and most of all, moments that are actually scary. Not once was I scared when playing Resident Evil 5. Not once. And this is supposed to be a horror game? It's about as scary as L4D, which isn't scary in the least. There wasn't a single thing in RE5 that surpassed its predecessor, aside from graphics and the fact that it has CoOp. Resident Evil 5 was just a really bland game.

Then there's the fact that RE5 is consolized. Sure, you can see more enemies on the screen on the PC version, but aside from that, what is there? Aside from that, there's the abomination Games for Windows Live that you have to install to play the game. Sure, it lets you make an offline account, but that doesn't stop it from being a pain. Thankfully, at least the PC version has mouse support. It strikes me as odd that mouse support is something that PC gamers look for in games these days.

The only really good thing about RE5 is the fact that it has CoOp. I can see why the developers included it, because without it, it would be absolutely horrible. Although I did have a ton of fun playing CoOp, it got old after a while. Not even CoOp can fix the bland, dull environments or the lack of any real horror elements. Resident Evil 5 seems really rushed compared to RE4. There are only two unlockable characters for Mercenaries Mode. Compare that to Resident Evil 4 and how it had four unlockable characters and a lot more content.

The main game itself wasn't that great. Without going into much detail, the plot was lousy. There were no surprises of any kind. There were times when the same bosses were used over again. It was just really boring. Your partner's AI is pretty dumb, more often than not, getting you into trouble instead of helping you.

If you absolutely HAVE to get this game, make sure you have a friend to play it with. If not, don't even bother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something New For me, December 2, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resident Evil 5 (DVD-ROM)
The game is awesome. Things fly out of my screen and the characters look human. I've never seen anything like it. The detail is incredible, down to moving maggots on bodies. If you set the depth too high and have to look away, you will have trouble adjusting when you first look back. You feel like you're cross-eyed for a few seconds. It is hard to play with a mouse and keyboard, even for me on the beginner setting, but it's cool to move through the Somalia type world.
I'm not a real gamer but I wanted a powerful computer that wouldn't bog down. I got the 3D monitor and glasses free with the system. I have a 1 TB hard drive, 8 gigs of RAM, and 1792 Megs of RAM on my Nivdia 260 video card. More than enough to run this game, if there is ever enough. I'm going to get the x-box 360 for windows controller from Amazon because they have the best price I've found for a new one. With the right equipment, there should not be any problems. I haven't had any yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Capcom got it right this time *may contain spoilers*, September 17, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resident Evil 5 (DVD-ROM)
First and foremost I am very glad Capcom didn't decide to go with Ubisoft for this port and it shows. This port is actually quality stuff. Graphics look amazing (another review stated that it beats the console versions, I don't own the console version so I can't tell you for sure), the cutscenes are high quality, and so far the game itself is very stable, no problems whatsoever.

As for the game itself, its a pretty entertaining game. I could have done without having a co-op partner though. Unlike RE4, you start off with a small inventory and keep the small inventory (I'm at chapter 6 and I still haven't found a way to increase the inventory so I don't think its possible). However, to help you with this Sheva also has an inventory to store more stuff. And every single item in the game only takes up 1 block in the inventory. Also unlike RE4, ammo isn't as plentiful this time around so make sure to kill what only can't be avoided and try not to miss. The AI is nowhere near perfect. During one boss fight Sheva actually picked up the land mines that I had planted, this only happened once though so it may be a glitch. Being able to chain together submission moves is a welcomed change, very effective at handling mobs (and the infected gang up on you quite often). The story is ignorable, nothing special about it at all although it does mirror RE4 to an extent. I am not a fan of LIVE but it is needed to save your progress, kinda uncool there. Game supports the mouse and a 360 controller. You still can't move and shoot at the same time but I prefer it this way actually, makes the game slightly more intense since you are completely in harm's way when you are lining up a shot. The quick-action button combination pressing deal during cutscenes is a little awkward at first using a keyboard but after awhile it becomes like second nature.

Overall, an entertaining action game. I only paid $45 for this since Steam had a pre-order special and I feel it was worth the money. Game also has good replay value as well.

I have a pretty decent rig and I can run this game on high with 2x AA and motion blur turned on just fine. I'm running a Pentium dual-core clocked at 2.2Ghz, 4GB DDR2 RAM, GeForce 250GTS. So the game has relatively low requirements.

Pro: great game, excellent (and plenty of) cut scenes. Actually some people may feel there are too many cut scenes -- literally you play 1 min and watch 30 sec cut scenes, but it's just right for someone like me who likes to play a game as if I was watching a movie. Some people may find >stop to aim/shoot< annoying but come on, that's way more realistic than running while the aiming cursor doesn't even shake a bit.

Con:
- it took me 50 minutes to install, which I thought was way too long. I cancelled the first installation attempt after 10 min seeing that the progress bar hasn't moved and thought that the dvd is bad.
- needs the DVD to play. I downloaded the no DVD patch to play it. I paid for the game and find it more difficult to install and play than the pirate version, and companies don't understand why people would rather just download the cracked games?
- while >stop to shoot< is good, having to >stop to knife attach< is annoying and unrealistic. I am sure you can run while wielding a knife in real life. But the point is that when you are out of ammo, slashing the enemies with you knife is a pain. The first three slashes will cause the enemy to back off, and since you cannot move while holding the knife, you have to put the knife back to your back, run forward, draw the knife again, which costs you a lot of time. Or at least enable holding the knife as a weapon/running while holding the knife, so that you don't need to automatically switch back to an empty gun when using the knife.
- Amazon mistake? I ordered the US version but got the EU version instead.
