A very fitting soundtrack. Dark, gritty, and brooding.,
By Azrael "Azrael" (middle of nowhere) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music from and Inspired by The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
Reading through the reviews on this site really shows what is wrong with music today. It's not the music that has a problem, but the so-called fans. It's becoming very clichéd not to like a band because they are popular, and that shows from the few bad reviews this soundtrack has received. As of the time this was written, there are currently two bad ratings, and two mid-ranged ratings. It seems the only complaint the two negative reviewers can come up with is that most of the bands featured on this album are mainstream, and therefore instantly bad. So just because a band happens to get lucky and gets noticed by the majority of the public, they are automatically worthless. Never mind the fact that they had to bust their asses to get to where they are today, and if they were unsigned they'd probably be worshiped by these so-called music lovers.
Now, once you get down to what these reviews should be about, you'll find a very solid album. It defiantly fits the movie, with all of the tracks having a dark and brooding feel to them. Lots of heavy, guitar laden tracks that are perfect for slaying zombies or banging your head to. I especially enjoyed "The Chauffeur" by the Deftones and the acoustic version of "End of the World" by Cold. Overall, I love this album, and I think if people would get over the whole "I don't like them because they are popular" crap, a lot more people would enjoy this album as well.

A Snap-Shot Of Modern Popular Metal,
By A. Estes (Maine) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music from and Inspired by The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
The soundtrack to "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" doesn't seem to have much to do with the movie. Now, I haven't seen it, but I can't find any corelation between zombies and love songs. But that's neither here nor there. I didn't buy the soundtrack because of the movie, I bought it because of the impressive set-list. Everything a metal or hard-rock fan could want is here. Everyone from Cradle Of Filth to The Used and The Cure to Cold are represented on here. This compilation is distributed by Roadrunner Records, which means the newest singles by the most popular bands in their roster are present here. Killswitch Engage's "End Of Heartache" and Slipknot's "Vermillion" arrive in the form of remixed radio edits. Now honestly, does anyone who buys these albums get offended by some screaming, or some thick guitars and obscenities? Hardly. So why bother? The edit of "End Of Heartache" absolutely butchers the original. Cradle Of Filth's "Nymphetamine," another single, is a highlight. I was never a fan of the band (no offense, just not my bag), but the added female vocals lend the song much more appeal and dimension. A song that is both beautiful and ugly at the same time. Demon Hunter's "Heart Strings Come Undone" is the best song on here, in my opinion. Another love (or anti-love, however you view it) song, which actually sounds nothing like what Demon Hunter usually does. Danny Lohner remixes tracks from A Perfect Circle ("The Outsider") and Rob Zombie ("Girl On Fire"). As always, his remixes are fun and interesting and toally warp the original work. The Deftones' cover of Duran Duran's "The Chauffeur" and Cold's acoustic version of "End Of The World" are both great rarities that are worth buying the compilation for alone. Previously released music by CKY and Thrice actually fit the movie a bit better than the other music, and help round up the set nicely. However, the album is not without it's faults. I cannot get over how dumb Devildriver are, and their track here hasn't made a believer of me yet. Also, I still can't get over the editing and censoring aspect. I repeat, no one who buys these albums gets offended, so enough already. Still, it's a great mix of music, and will be stuck in your CD player for months. It's introduced me to many artists who I hadn't listened to before (Lacuna Coil and H.I.M.) and will most likely do the same for you. You're getting your money's worth here.

A killer soundtrack despite its flaws,
By
This review is from: Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music from and Inspired by The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
A couple of weekends ago, I picked up a promotional copy of the soundtrack to "Resident Evil: Apopcalypse". I thought it was worth checking out after I saw the track list awhile back. Although I do not care for Slipknot, The Used, and Cradle of Filth, I still wanted to hear the soundtrack for the Lacuna Coil, The Cure, Rammstein, and Massive Attack tracks. Much to my surprise, I found myself enjoying the soundtrack more than I imagined. I still don't like the Slipknot and The Used songs but most of the cd totally rocks and I am not a metal fan. I didn't like The Cure song. It isn't the same Cure that I fell in love years ago. Their new album was a big disappointment for this longtime fan. The tracks that I especially loved the best were Cradle of Filth (thanks in part to former Theatre of Tragedy vocalist Liv Kristine with her vocals she contributed to the song), Rammstein, CKY, Killswitch Engage, HIM, and Rammstein. I especially love "Nymphetamine" by Cradle of Filth and "Join Me In Death" by HIM. I never imagined myself enjoying a CoF song but I did. It was melodic yet heavy. Dani Filth's duet with Liv was truly one of the highlights of the soundtrack for me. HIM's "Join Me In Death" took my breath away. It was simply one of the most beautiful songs on the cd. Rammstein is still Rammstein with "Mein Teil". Just classic Rammstein. I can't wait for their new cd to come out later this fall (probably October or November). I can never tire of Lacuna Coil's "Swamped" even if the song isn't new or previously unreleased. All in All, "Resident Evil: Apopcalypse" is a great soundtrack. I haven't been able to stop listening to it since I got it.

Get it for Christmas!,
By Dark Eyes "Bamf-meister" (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music from and Inspired by The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I still have "Buy Resident Evil Soundtrack" on my to do list, but with the release of the Resident Evil Apocalypse movie it got bumped back so that I could by this first. My brother, whom had listened to most of the songs online, was sent with some of my savings off to buy me copy. A few hours later, the soundtrack was in my possession.
I will let you know that I absolutely LOVED the seond Resident Evil movie and therefore had high expectations for the album. I was sorely disapointed when "Not Listening" by Papa Roach (which is played in the Trailer for RE2) was indeed not on the tracklist. Not that perturbed however I sat down to listen to the albumn. At first, I was extremely disapointed, now, after listening to it properly, it hasn't left my discman and CD player for long!! It starts off strong with Slipknot's Vermillion but then seemed to declined alittle, in my first estimations, until about Swamped by Lacuna Coil. I will admit both The Used and The Cure's song have since grown on me, and I will gladly listen to them, although you may find yourself alittle bored and disheartened by these tracks if you're like me. I assure you, Do not switch off your CD players! By far "Outsider" and "The End of Heartache" are the best songs on the albumn. I am partial to the vocalist of Tool, but this song is very good! Killswitch Engage's song at Number six probably deserved to be pushed alittle up on the track order as most people will recognise it as the song playing from the credits, but nonetheless I was overjoyed when I heard it! IT ROCKS!! Rammstein is by far a very good metal band, although it seriously cracks up alot of my friends to hear people sing in German, but the music seriously makes up for the fact that I can't understand most of the words. Number eight is the worst song, in my view, on the albumn, not only because of the singers icky voice but also the mediocre rhyme in lyrics really didn't impress me. I would like to say that the second half of the albumn is seriously awesome, alot more consistently good than the first. Nymphetamine is a brilliant song, the contrast between the light music and female vocalist goes well with the heavy backdrop. Even if you don't like Cradle of Filth (myself not being tht keen on alot of their songs) this song is indeed brilliant. CKY is another good song, with the bridge being the feature that causes you to go back and listen to it later. The Deftones song, certainly finds itself in my good estimations, but does try your patience. Even when I find myself listening to it now, I am constantly waiting for that really heavy bit to kick in, unfortunately it doesn't really have any stark pinacle, there is one around the third minute, but its alittle too close to the end of the song, besides this, the chorus is softer than the versus too muchly so. New paragraph! Just to break monotomy! ^_^ Now we reach song number twelve, "Join me in Death" by HIM. At the start of the song, I thought the song was rather 'poppy' for a metal band, but if you give it alittle time, you'll find me wrong. I really do like this song, the clear lyrics really get you listening and involved with the song. There is a good balance here, the song has a rather gentle theme, but it is managed well with a strong beat, guitars and the dominant melody on the piano. Another good hit. Nightwish comes next and its paired up well after HIM, with another song with the piano intro. Nightwish is my brother's favourite band and I am not quite partial to them as I hear them blazing every time he washes up the dinner. Despite this, this song is quite tolerable, I like the singer's voice and enjoy the song. It gets alot of credit from my friends, who also like it on first impressions. It was the most "folk-like" song on the soundtrack. Killing Time, by Thrice, is another brilliant song. It was one of the songs that when I originally flicked through the album thought was really good. Another one you'll be reaching to hit repeat. This song is coupled with another good song, Bloodwork by 36 crazy fists and the echoing vocals compliment the song well. This song builds up every chorus with both a crushendo (sp) in both vocals and instruments whilst the middle has an awesome section!! This is simply one of the best songs along with "Outsider" and "The End of Heartache". Cold is a good band, I've loved them since Remedy. I should remind you that this is the acoustic version of the song 'End of the World" and I guess this takes the edge of the song away. I should have to listen to the real song but the acoustic version makes the song somewhat more tolerable for the older members of my family who do comment on the skill in the guitar in this. Either way, its still a good song and gets a thumbs up from me. The last two songs are alright, they're alittle obscure in my memory and I really don't remember them as well as the other. Girl of Fire is good though, I like it, although Massive Attacks is recalled in my mind to be mostly instrumental but still a nice end to a good sountrack. WOW!! My review is over. I should tell you to listen to this albumn a few times over at first, stick it on MEdia Player on your comp or in your car and don't judge it on first impression and on the first few songs. The fact that the CD ends with really goos songs, rather than all the goos songs being right at the start and some crappy ones at the end, really sets it apart from other albums. This CD is a snapshot of new metal, metal and folk metal and if you're not a metal fan than I don't advise you to buy this. Otherwise, this CD is FCUKING BRILLIANT!!! BUY IT FOR CHRISTMAS!!

Overload of new metal,
By Damian Gunn "The Dark One is I" (I am everywhere) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music from and Inspired by The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
The great thing about Roadrunner Records putting out a soundtrack is that you know the best of the new metal crowd will be gracing the track list and this effort is no exeption. The first soundtrack was stellar and so I knew this one would be as well. The only problem with the Roadrunner soundtrack releases is the editing process...WHY EDIT THE ALBUM...we, the consumer, do not care about a few curse words...we do buy these artists albums! Anyways, besides that issue, this album is really really top notch.
1. Slipknot - Vermilion Kicking things off is a more mellow track by the insane Slipknot. It shows a softer side by them and while not my favorite track (the remix on the Underworld Evolution Soundtrack is better) it showcases a creepy eerie vibe and haunting vocals by Cory. Don't get the idea that this is a slow soft song, just not as insane as the normal Slipknot. It still has bite, the teeth have just been dulled a bit. Decent start for the album. 2. The Used - Just A Little The Used prove here that they are a lot heavier then the average MTV watcher might assume. This song was actually what pushed me to go out and by their latest album with the idea that it has to be good and I was right. The part towards the end where it gets real slow is just awsome. This song is exceptional. 3. The Cure - Us or Them Not a Cure fan but this song seems to fit well so no complants here. I could have found a more deserving track to go here by some other Roadrunner labelmate, but oh well...it's not terrible. 4. Lacuna Coil - Swamped If you have never heard of Lacuna Coil you need to buy their CD Comolies ASAP. They are one of the greatest bands ever. This is not Evenescence so if your an Amy Lee hater (I don't know why you would be) don't be afraid to listen to this band. This song is perfect for showing how they can haunt a track so splendedly. The lead singers voice is just pure and beautiful while the male singer offsets that with a rough voice that makes this one duo worth listening to. 5. A Perfect Circle - The Outsider (Renholder Mix) Everytime Maynard remixes one of his many songs it's worth it and this is no execption. Perfect mix of rock and techno. Love every minute of it. WHen he starts to sing and the beat muffles a bit and it sounds kinda like his voice is broken and distorted it's just awsome. 6. Killswitch Engage - The End Of Heartache Killswitch has been around for a while but it wasn't until recently that they've been getting cred here. They have a distinct melodicy to their metal, and they remind me a bit of Mudvayne if that's possible. They have a great sense of brutal melody as does Mudvayne and the lead singer can sing and scream to perfectly compliment the music. THis is not my favorite song by them but it's decent...the verses are great and the pounding drums are pretty cool. 7. Rammstein - Mein Teil This song is my favorite on the Soundtrack. Rammstein have always been a favorite of mine because they have a great way of being the scariest band I have ever heard. They are the perfect example of what Industrial Goth Metal should be and I don't care if you disagree...this song is freaking brilliant. The song alone is about a cannibal and so the creepy factor is high but the industial beat and the lead singers creepy growls and the chuch type hyms in the backdrop make this the best addition to this soundtrack! 8. DevilDriver - Digging Up The Corpses Dez left Coal Chamber to form this band and while not my favorite band this song is really cool. Straight in your face and the chorus will make ou get up and chant 'Digging up the corpses, tell me another story!" 9. Cradle Of Filth - Nymphetamine I really hate this band. The sog choice here is acceptable only because of the female vocals that run over the course of the song but other than that this song is crap... 10. CKY - Escape From Hellview Decent. I had never heard of these guys before but after hearing this song, while I don't think it fits well with the vube of the soundtrack it's a deent song and I would be willing to check out their other $hit...the song is just a little to catchy, the chorus kinda reminds me of that 'Little Black Backpack' song. 11. Deftones - The Chauffeur I like this band and was glad to see a rarity show up on the soundtrack versus just a track off their latest CD. Chino sounds great as usual. The song adds a mellow feel to the CD and works well to break up the pace. 12. H.I.M. - Join Me In Death Yet another mellow track with piano and light vocals. I had heard that this band was insanly brutal but I must have heard wrong. I skip this track...it's just not that great. 13. Demon Hunter - My Heartstrings Come Undone One of the best bands ever put one of their best songs ever on this soundtrack. This band is insanly brutal and while this song shows a softer side to them it's awsome and just shows the diversity this band has. THe lead singer has a great voice and the band as a whole works well together. This song has a lot of melody intertwined with a lot of power. 14. Thrice - Under A Killing Moon This song is more along the line of Emo and it works. They remind me of Atryu so if you dig them then you'll like this track. The guitar work is impressive and the overall feel of the song, while not really a perfect fit to the CD, is still decent and listionable. The bridge is killer! 15. 36 Crazyfists - Bloodwork I love this band and this is one of my favorite tracks by them. THis is a highlight to the album. The baselines provide the base to the song and add some harmonics and Brock Lindows impressive unique vocal talents and you have one kick @$$ song! 16. Cold - End The World (acoustic) I love this song as well and the acoustic version just adds a stripped down feeling of emptiness to the song that works so well in keeping with an eerie vibe. When you take the lyrics and the meaning behind them and give them this slowed down stipped down raw grundgy unplugged beat it gives it a so much different feeling in general than the original. 17. Rob Zombie - Girl On Fire (Resident Renholder Mix) SO Maynard remixes a Rob Zombie song and does decent. Not spectacular, nothing like the APC remix he did. I would have chosen a different song to remix...maybe Living Dead Girl, but thats just my opinion... 18. Massive Attack - Future Proof Great closer because it brings you into the vibe of the film...you can almost close your eyes and see the scenes from the film runing across your mind. Don't listen to this in the dark...just kidding. ANyways...it was a great effort...fell short a few spots but as a whole it works well...I'd recomend picking up the first soundtrack as well as the Underworld and Saw soundtracks as they provide better compilations of top notch metal and industrial techno remix pieces that should satisfy your cravings!

An Awesome Soundtrack To An Awesome Movie,
By Person "Person" (Maryland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music from and Inspired by The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
This Soundtrack rocks! It's much better than the soundtrack of the first film. The Slipknot song ("Vermillion) was trimmed down a bit, probably because it was too long, but it isn't really a loss if you have Vol 3: (The Subliminal Verses). The short version of Cradle of Filth's "Nymphetamine" is also on the soundtrack, and the Devildriver song ("Digging Up The Corpses") is awesome. The Deftones song is a cover song. It isn't very heavy, but it is still good. Among the other good bands that appear on this soundtrack are: The Used, The Cure, Killswitch Engage, and Rob Zombie. This is probably the best soundtrack CD of 2004.

Impressive lineup, impressive soundtrack.,
By A. Stutheit "Teyad" (Denver, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music from and Inspired by The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I bought this soundtrack purely for the Deftones' Duran Duran cover, but when I listened to the rest of the soundtrack, I was pleasantly surprised with what I found. I was introduced to new bands (Demon Hunter, Massive Attack), and new music from soon to be released albums (A Perfect Circle, Rammstein), which made me want to hear the rest of their music when it comes out. The soundtrack presents a great mix of music: everything from new metal (Killswitch Engage), to emo (the Used), to old school rock (the Cure) is represented here. Also, since many of the songs have a dark undertone, the soundtrack seems to fit well with the movie.
The Used's "Just A Little" introduces me to the Used's "new sound", which is milder than what was on their debut album (slower, with real singing). The next track, by the Cure, is also slow, but when Lacuna Coil hit the scene, things pick back up again. I had not heard much from the band, but I believe this song is one of the best on the soundtrack. The female singer wails away (sounding like Amy Lee from Evanescence). But this isn't an Evanescence copycat. The song also features a male singer, and background metal with guitars that chug and churn. A Perfect Circle's contribution is a remix, and while clearly made on the computer, is good as far as remixes go. Killswitch Engage's track is the title track to their latest album. It is edited for radio, but I hardly notice the edits. The singer's almost soulful voice soars over hard riffs and double kick drums. Rammstein's "Mein Teil", off their new C.D. "Reise Reise", is another high point of the album. It made me want their new C.D. The wall-shaking riffs are different than what we heard on Rammstein's last two C.D.s and the singer's eerie growl goes well with the music. With female backed vocals, I could hardly tell "Nymphetamine" was a Cradle of Filth track, until the male singer's devilsh voice enters the scene. Thrice's "Under a Killing Moon" is metal and punk. The singer's voice sounds almost like any other punk singer's voice, but the guitar riffs are clearly metal. The previously mentioned Deftones' cover, "The Chauffeur" (which is spacey, eerie, and pretty), Cold's acoustic rendition of "End of the World" and Rob Zombie's "Girl on Fire" remix are all good rarities that are worth buying the soundtrack for if you're a fan of the band. The only song which is essentially unlistenable, to me, is Devildriver's cut, "Digging up the Corpses." Now, I have nothing against Devildriver or Devildriver's singer, Dez Fafara, but this song's lyrics and vocals are so ridiculous and contrived, it's laughable. As previously stated, if you're an A Perfect Circle, Deftones, Cold, or Rob Zombie (or even Devildriver) fan, this soundtrack is essential for your collection. This soundtrack is long and diverse enough that you'll be entertained by it for a nice, long while. It's been in-and-out of my C.D. player for months.

This is the best soundtrack ever!!!!,
This review is from: Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music from and Inspired by The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
This is the best metal soundtrack I have ever heard. Every song is amazing and they all flow nicely together. It really fits the movie. The only song I didnt like as much as the others was the CKY track. But, my friend Monte says its his favorite track. If you like metal, if you like dark music, you will love this record. You wont find anything like it out there.

Best Soundtrack I've Seen For A While,
By Suqary Sweet "Suqary Sweet" (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music from and Inspired by The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I just bought this CD about two hours ago and I'm absolutely in love with it. I have already developed a favorite track which is "Swamped" by Lacuna Coil. Some people might think that I have picked the more "pop-ish" song on the Soundtrack to like, but I could care less. My second favorite track on here is "Nymphetamine" by Cradle of Filth. I have been reading reviews of this album before buying it and it is quite shocking to hear people judge it by how "metal" it is. I don't think a soundtrack should be judged by the category of music it falls in, but by the content of it. Almost all the songs on here are very listenable and quite enjoyable. Those people who only listen to music that falls in their "category" don't know what they're missing. Why not just break out of your box and stop labeling things? It only makes great albums like this look bad. The standout tracks (to me) are:
"Swamped," "Nymphetamine," "Mein Teil," "The Outside," and "Us or Them" just to name a small few. I seriously suggest you go out and pick up this album right now. You wont regret it.

Finally...a worthwhile soundtrack!,
This review is from: Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music from and Inspired by The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
It's been too long since a good dark soundtrack has come out, but finally it has happened. With this CD, you get some old greats along with some up-and-comers that will definitely impress.I think the song that has impressed me the most is Track 9 (Cradle of Filth's Nymphetamine). This song is a bit different from stuff the band has released in the past...a bit slower...but nonetheless an absolutely amazing song. Dani Filth's duet with Liv Kristine Espenaes Krull is absolutely beautiful and haunting all at the same time. This song alone was worth buying the soundtrack for (although the track will be released on the new CoF CD being released Sept. 28, 2004). Other songs that standout are Track 3 (Us or Them by the Cure), Track 4 (Swamped by Lacuna Coil...an obvious great from their Comalies CD), Track 5 (Renholder's remix of A Perfect Circle's The Outsider), Track 7 (Mein Tiel by Rammstein) and Track 17 (another Renholder remix...this time the song being Girl On Fire, an original Rob Zombie track). Other notable bands include Demon Hunter, 36 Crazyfists and an artist that I was not too familiar with but will be looking into now that I have gotten a sample of the music...HIM (the song Join Me In Death is featured here). Overall, 18 tracks featured and at least 17 of them I truly like here (the only song I don't really care for is Track 18 by Massive Attack...I just didn't feel it fit here...but I'm not the biggest Massive Attack fan there is so you may feel differently about it than me). If you've been waiting for a great soundtrack since the days of the Crow soundtrack, Natural Born Killers, the Ginger Snaps soundtrack or even the last Resident Evil soundtrack...wait no longer...PICK THIS BABY UP! Like I said earlier, the Cradle of Filth song alone is perfect but you get two hand fulls extra of great music to go with the "Filth" song! DaF,I. |
