3.0 out of 5 stars Code Veronica is a good game but it lacks in key areas
First of all, the graphics are outstanding. There is some fog and a little slowdown but thats hardly noticable. Simply put, these graphics are some of the best to be seen on any console... period.

The sound is good... the music helps set the "scary mood" of the game, and the zombies have those moaning voices that we've all come to love. But unfortunatley, the...

The only trouble that I had in the game was the seven painting room puzzle, and that the game was in Japanese. I love this game every second of it is action packed with more and more surprises as the story unfolds. It even has some characters from the first Resident Evil, but I'm not about to give those away. This game absolutely blew me away. I said this about Nemesis but Code Veronica is the best game in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Reason why I Bought a DC in the First place!, April 12, 2000

I am a huge Res Evil fan. I bought a Dreamcast last fall because this game would eventually come. The new 3D environment is wonderful. The dual guns are a cool addition. You can skip the scinemas. Also, if you read all the game files, you'll find the story to be much bigger and more TWISTED than the past REs.

You'll definately need a VMU to play the first few times for saving. You can see your health status on the VMU screen (a big help). The Jump Pak adds some fun too.

I'm an exprienced RE fan (like many of you). However, I do get lost from time to time. I highly recommend buying the Prima strategy guide just as an aid for those trouble spots that come up. It has a detailed walk-through and maps but don't ruin some of the surprises. Plus, it's easier than downloading and printing a walk-through via Internet.

I want to address two critiques of other players. Some say that the game isn't "scary" enough. PLEASE remember that this is the 4th Resident Evil story game. If you've played the other REs, then you'll already know what to expect in the game. It's like watching the "Friday the 13th" films. You don't have to watch all 9 movies to know that Jason cuts up any idiot that comes into his forest. Consentrate more on the gameplay, adventure, and story of Code Veronica. Second is the "lack of gore". I'm not sure what the reviewers mean by this. Perhaps it refers to the zombies' body parts not dismembering when you blast or stomp on them. Please don't let this defer you from playing (or buying) this game. This is very minor issue compared to the whole package of RE:CV you'll get.

I only have two personnal problems with this game. (1) I wished Chris's game was a litle longer or side by side with Clair's game like RE2. This is not a put-down. I have a little sister myself, and I would have liked to play "big brother" more. (2) The battle game is fun BUT too small and too difficult. This feature seems more like an after thought by the game makers. I don't want to give away too much. I'll just say that getting an "A Grade" in the Battle Game is damn near impossible.

Finally, if you like to read, I recommend buying the four Resident Evil novelizations, "Umbrella Conspiracy", "Caliban Cove", "City of the Dead", and "Underworld". Remember, if you rate this review, base the rating on its usefulness. Don't rate on whether you agree with me or not. Thanks.

Resident Evil is a great game. This game is fun, if you don't believe its fun READ THE OTHER REVIEWS. The graphics are great and the weapons are cool, if you want to know the weapons here is an example of weapons: G. Launcher, hand gun, custom handgun, shotgun, bow gun, magnum, linear launcher, etc. This game is so scary im still stuck on the second disc and won't play unless somebody else is in the room! The controls are a bit hard but can easily get used to. If you like Re games i suggest buying this one because it is the best out of all the Resident evils so far. The game is quite short if you play it non stop and if you arent scared. It takes a hefty amount of time if you are scared and arent able to play it. Everything about this game is good. Hint* hint* if you use a strategy guide it will ruin the whole game and also don't get the gameshark if you aren't done with the game yet! So what I am trying to say is GET THIS GAME NOW IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT, CUZ THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST RE's!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Dreamcast Game out there!, April 6, 2000

To address the few reviewers who were disappointed, let me say that if you are playing a game or series of games just because it is gory then maybe you should reconsider why you play video games. I play video games for the fun of it. Granted, gore can add something, but gory games like this and Quake also have a huge fun factor involved that the element of gore, whether present or not, can't detract from the actual playing experience. Yes it is sometimes cool and satisfying to see a zombie's head splatter into bits and pieces but I don't think these things make or break a game. I don't even think there is a surprising lack of gore in Code Veronica anyway, none obviously less than the other games. Maybe some people have just become too desensitized. For those of you getting tired of the Resident Evil formula (like me) this breathes some new life into the series for players looking for something fresh. The high level of graphical detail the DC offers is breathtaking. This RE game provides the best story yet and brings in some new gameplay elements to keep it from getting stale. There really are some scary moments that will make you jump; the overall atmosphere is more menacing. I haven't played through a game like this since Metal Gear Solid on the PSX. A game where I just totally lost all sense of time. I greatly anticipate the next installment in the series. It'll be interesting to see how much they can fine tune this already benchmark of a game and series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Say goodbye to daylight. This game is that good., April 1, 2000

There are those out there that like being scared. I can't explain it, I'm not a Physiologist but that's the way some of us are. The Resident Evil series has been very successful in exploiting our hidden desire to be frightened. What has been lacking in the series is the technology to make us believe that what we are seeing is real, and Resident Evil: Code Veronica is closing the gap fast. The graphics and sound are truly amazing, showing off the true power of the Dreamcast system. The game is a fright-fest. The way the game builds tension makes you wonder if Wes Craven didn't serve as a consultant during development.

Everything down to the sound of raindrops on metal drums, the buzz of gnats flying around a street light, and the heavy fall of footsteps getting closer all lend a hand to those hairs on the back of your neck standing at attention. The game is enhanced by the addition of a rumble pack, which will pulse in synch with your heartbeat in some parts the game.

The monsters are 'smarter' and more dangerous. In some cases they actually set up ambushes for you in small corridors. They wait around corners before lunging at you. You open a door and they're there to greet you(and not with cheese and crackers). They also look to close off any avenues of escape, many times pinning you in a corner and forcing you to fight your way out. Running away is not as easy as it was in the earlier games. There are many areas where you find yourself in 'tight quarters'.

The graphics are truely amazing and sometimes you have to remind yourself it's only a game. Camera angles will rotate automatically, giving you a better view when needed. Muzzle flares from your firearms briefly illuminate a dark room and striking a wall with your survival knife will create sparks. It's this level of graphic detail that is easily appreciated.

As with all Resident Evil games there is a lot of backtracking through areas you've already explored. Many times you will come across an object that will open a previous, unavailable area. Many times new monsters will be lurking when you return.

If you're looking for a game with a great story line, intense situations, and a fear factor that's off the charts (I've jumped out on my seat more than once already) this game is for you. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Series, March 29, 2000

If you've played any of the earlier incarnations of the renowned Resident Evil series, you know what to expect: high drama, intriguing storyline, biting suspense, bad voice acting and fun, hidden extras.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica surpasses the earlier chapters in every way. The graphics have been given a "next generation" facelift. Gone are the pre-rendered backdrops with static cameras; in its place are highly-detailed polygon backgrounds with dramatically sweeping camera movements, giving the settings the impression of a well-blocked movie. The blocky characters have been replaced with high-polygon well-shaded models that give the game a very believable appearance.

Storylines have always been a strong point of the Resident Evil series and this release, although developed in-house by Sega for Capcom, did have its story and outline pre-written by the same persons responsible for all of the others. Code Veronica furthers the intriguing on-going story of the the Redfields and the Umbrella Corp.

This game is a masterpiece. I've played the import all the way through as Claire and am ready for the second disc. world's finest console available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Resident Evil: Code Veronica....The Horror CONTINUES, April 2, 2000

All that I can say about this game is that it truely pioneers Adventure games for the Dreamcast. Exceptional graphics, and the sound is amazing. The sound is so good that you feel like your there, with the zombies and monsters. The game does have gore in it, just like the other Resident Evil Games. The voice acting is ok, but the plot of the game is the best of all of the games! If you are debating about wich new game to buy, this is the one! It has 2 disks and has 40 hours of game-play! The Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine gave it a 10 out of 10. I give it five stars out of five. It's fun to play, but scary in the dark! The game controls are easy to use and it's a very clear game to understand. This game is a must for any dreamcast owner and for any person who loves adventure/survival horror games.

WARNING! THIS GAME IS NOT FOR YOUNG CHILDREN OR THE WEAK AT HEART! PLAY AT YOUR OWN RISK! JUST BECAUSE IT'S THE BEST GAME DOESN'T MEAN THAT IT WONT BE SCARY! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

I am mad at the people who reviewed this game and gave it 2 or 3 stars, the guy who complained about the fog is wrong cause it was part of the scheme, this is without a doubt the best Dreamcast game to date and pretty much will be for a long time, I own a playstation and have the first 3 RE and CV is the best yet, the longest yet, and has the best story in a RE to date. I had my order pre-ordered around Christmas time and was worth the money and time. I have (for Dreamcast) Dead or Alive 2, Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi, NFL 2K, NBA 2K & Resident Evil Code Veronica, and I think that RECV is way ahead on the competition not only do you play with Claire from RE2 but Chris from RE1. I have beat the game and unlocked a 1st person view so you can play RE quake style and RECV has by far the best boss to date and you will see the return of someone else from RE1 besides Chris. So if you are reading this to think about buying it, Don't think do, oh and if you get this trust me you WILL NEED a guide as this is also the hardest RE to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slam-dunk for survival horror junkies, October 13, 2001
This review is from: Resident Evil Code Veronica (Video Game)
The Resident Evil games have long been a Playstation staple, having had three wildly successful games in the series. Well move over Playstation, because the franchise is moving to Dreamcast and going hi-res!

Resident Evil: Code Veronica takes place between Resident Evil 2 and 3, and once again features Claire Redfield and her brother Chris. This time Claire is being held prisoner on an Umbrella-owned, zombie infested island far away from Racoon City. On her desperate attempt to escape the island, Claire meets several characters - some helpful, but most not so helpful.

Code Veronica plays exactly like the other Resident Evil games (I've got them all), so if you like that style of control, you're in business here. What really sets Code Veronica apart from it's siblings, however are the graphics. I think I can confidently say that this is the best looking zombie game ever made. You can see every pus-oozing sore on those pathetic zombies, and environments are fully rendered in 3D.

This game is a slam-dunk if you like the survival horror genre.

This Resident Evil is the best out of the lot. The graphics on this are the best that i have seen of any Resident Evil game, and the puzzles have been taken afurther which i am glad about as in all of the other Rsident Evils all of the puzzles were similar. The game is longer than all of the other Resident Evils, and in like some of the previous games you get to take on the roles of other characters. The zombies are more intelligent and there seems to be a better feel to this game than all the others. Congratulations to Sega for producing the best game out of the series
