Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
It's truly a shame that Resistance: Burning Skies has been under fire in many reviews. Now, everyone's allowed to have their opinion, even though I strongly disagree with it and find some scores to be way off. I'll just say that I can't find anything about this game that'd put it on par with some of the worst games out there. Granted, it's not a perfect gaming product and has its fair share of issues, but none of these really harm the overwhelmingly great experience. This is a very good FPS for the Vita. Even if it were on console, I'd still enjoy it just as much.

Firstly, the presentation is pretty much great. There are some drawbacks such as lousy gun sounds and some weak texture detail in spots, but these two things don't harm the game much at all. The graphics are overall very nice, with some nicely detailed gun models, solid character models for lead characters, an impressive soundtrack, etc. The story is also one of my favorites in the Resistance franchise.

Secondly, the gameplay is superb. Dual analogs make this a buttery smooth FPS on the go. I didn't know how I'd feel about the touch controls, but I think most of them work well and make sense since you have two shoulder buttons on the Vita instead of four.

Thirdly, it's just a fun game that has a good story and great gameplay. An odd little glitch or framerate drop is ultimately just a small drawback and not a game killer.

Resistance: Burning Skies deserves your attention if you're a Vita owner looking for the next good game to spend your spare time on.

4.5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hate... July 29, 2012
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Resistance: Burning Skies was the first game I got for my Vita. I'm no super veteran when it comes to multiplayer, so I'll be writing primarily about the single player campaign. I've played the PS3 trilogy and Retribution and in my eyes, Burning Skies was a system seller. However, after reading scores of negative reviews (especially IGN) I was a little worried. At best I figured the game could be a fun throw away title that could wet my appetite for more FPS's on the system. What I ended up with was probably the most fun entry in the series.
It's hard to talk about fun and Resistance in the same sentence. Resistance, as a series, is a bit of a downer, to say the least. But what's always fun about the series are the crazy weapons, cool creatures, and the 50's war torn landscape. All of that is here in spades. In addition, it introduces what may be my favorite weapon in the series, The Mule. This is a double barrel shot gun with a napalm shooting crossbow attached to it. The game also gives us the fire axe, which is a cool new way to perform melee kills.
One gripe a lot of reviews had was the use of the Vita's touchscreen, says that the feature feels forced or shoehorned in. These features are really what made the gameplay stand out for me above the rest of the series. All secondary fire, grenades, and the fire axe are assigned to touch screen controls. Never has tagging a Chimera or throwing a grenade been more fulfilling then when you're tapping the enemy you want to tag or swiping your finger where you want the grenade to go. These controls really kept me in the game and kept me in the headspace of Tom Riley.
Which brings me to another point, and that's the character of Riley, himself. I love that we're controlling a firefighter this time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Portable FPS June 2, 2012
By SRITT3
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Lots of fun. Buy it, Play it, Trade it. Enjoy it.

I wasn't expecting much from the first generation of games released for the vita or any console. Most of the release titles for the vita have been very entertaining and Resistance: Burning Skies scratches that FPS itch nicely.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Entry to the Franchise February 1, 2013
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This review may come off odd to some folks, but I really enjoyed this game: much more so than the terrible Resistance 3. Unlike that game, this one has a protagonist you actually give a crap about. Seeing the invasion unfold before his eyes is an interesting experience, and fits well with the game's theme that every life is important, every life can make a difference.

But enough about that, let's get to the pros and cons

Pros:
Graphics- While certain areas are a mixed bag, the game as a whole has a wonderful look and feel to it. Sure it may not stack up against its console brothers, but it gets the job done.
Controls - This is where they nailed it. At no point did I feel I wasn't in control of my character. The touch controls, far from being a gimmick, are well implemented into the overall game.
Story - I put this, Resistance 2, and Resistance Retribution as the best entries in the series. It adds to the universe without taking something away (I'm looking at you Resistance 3)

Cons:
Length - Only about 6 hours in length. This is okay for a handheld, and the NG+ does add some replay value, but I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this game.
Story - Why you ask? Because while Riley's story is interesting...the hamfisted attempt to paint the resistance as the true fighters in the war against the Chimera is almost insulting. Where were these folks during Resistance 2 when *spoilers* Hale and Echo team were taking the fight to the Chimera? The only reason these folks have any hope at all are due to the efforts of the Sentinels. This is the same nitpick I have with Resistance 3, but I digress.

Overall if you're looking for a good FPS for the Vita, you can't go wrong with this game.

pre order bonus?
I didn't get an email, I preordered with release date delivery & tracking info says the game can't arrive till tomorrow. I often recommend amazon but I'm really beginning to dislike it; I should have just bought it at gamestop.
