5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of stories December 9, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
As a writer and fan of sf, I love this anthology. Ellison has always been a fave of mine. Also A.D. Bloom's story was very strong and we can expect more to come from him I'm sure. Also liked the essay about the future of writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have collection of stories December 9, 2011
By Synnr
Format:Kindle Edition
Each contribution to this anthology is a worthy addition on its own. Together they are a bouquet of creativity. You will find yourself looking at the other works of each of these authors. I am already a fan of William Vitka's work in particular.

Give this a try you will not be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kindle All-Stars Presents: Resistance Front December 9, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
That theme of the book--the "resistance" and "revolution" ideology--is what brings together established authors as well as new authors who have never been published in one united and spirited endeavor. I also like the inclusion of international authors. The world is full of fantastic cultures, which are not necessarily depicted with authenticity by the Big 6 traditional publishing houses (where "multicultural" is a "code word"--how can that truly support multiculturalism when the word means different things to the different people tossing it around as a marketing label?).

This is a massive anthology (37 stories/contributions!), and all proceeds go to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. That alone is reason enough to make a purchase, though content-wise, it's a multi-genre anthology, which is also something I enjoy most of the time (diversity keeps things fresh/interesting for both readers and writers).

Any reader/individual who's unsure why there's this whole "uprising" and "revolution" with independent publishing need not look any further than the introduction to KAS.

"An Ode to Print, From One Bent on Destroying It," has this to say:

===

"Whole generations of authors have been lost to us because they could not penetrate the murky swamps of corporate publishing. I imagine all the works of art that we'll never know of, simply because the vicious cycle of query-letter, agent, synopsis, publisher, book-seller, and eventual consumer did not work out for that individual.

When an industry coins a phrase like "Slush Pile" to reflect their opinion of where your work belongs, you get a pretty clear idea of your place in their world."

===

There are thoughtful/introspective speculative fiction pieces by Harlan Ellison and Alan Dean Foster (it's always nice how that sort of fiction reflects society, and how the imagination is used to examine both our world and the worlds beyond).

Jon Merz's story features tight writing and his famous badass vampire Lawson (no sappy paranormal angst here--no offense to those who enjoy such stories, but when you have thousands of similar paranormal heroes/heroines as a result of one of the current cash cow genres...). Angela McConnell's "The Shroudmaker" is a gripping story about a woman working on the dye for her batik (a traditional textile from the island of Java). Matt Posner's "Wheelchair Fights" is like a short film in terms of artistry and visuals--the atmosphere was spot-on, name choices were excellent, and the last line was very precise in its execution. I don't often enjoy mindless glorification of violence, though the stories in KAS which do feature the darker themes of humanity are done so in a way that's integral to the plot (thus removing the "mindless" factor).

When you look at these stories (and more--all 37!), perhaps you'll realize that some of them wouldn't see the light of day were it not for digital/independent publishing. Mainstream traditional publishers have reached the point where they're mostly only interested in publishing works that fit neatly into a commercial genre (YA paranormal romance; chick lit; mystery; thrillers; etc.). Focusing on the dollars only PREVENTS exciting and engaging work from being AVAILABLE to the reading public. That alone is reason enough to seek out and support independent authors who are actually real writers, who, as this anthology showcases, are more interested in crafting good stories, than supporting the corrupted--oops, I mean "corporate"--culture of the traditional publishing industry.

Thus, The Kindle All-Stars Project is also an invitation to readers everywhere to join in the revolution/resistance front. Are you ready to join?
