Editorial Reviews

Following the critical acclaim of his rousing music score for Insomniac Games' Resistance 2, Boris Salchow returns to craft a darker cinematic soundtrack for RESISTANCE 3 - reflecting the struggle of the remaining group of human survivors against an overwhelming force of alien invaders. To capture an authentic and unique sound for this alternate history sci-fi story set in the 1950's , Salchow and Insomniac recorded the emotionally diverse musical score with orchestra at the historic Abbey Road Studios in London.

i think a few years from we'll look back at 'resistance 3' as a highly underrated first-person shooter. with the return of the weapon wheel and the the weapon unlocks, the alternate 1950s history setting, and some really fun shootouts, R3 was a fitting end to fun a trilogy. unfortunately, R3 got lost in the great BF3 v. COD:MW3 battle of late 2011. it's a shame really, because it's a great game and i highly recommend you play it.

after i completed the game, i remember thinking, 'there's gotta be a soundtrack to this game avaialable.' for months and months i looked and finally, six months after the game hit shelves, the score was finally released! i grabbed it straightaway. i'm glad i did.

boris salchow's R3 score is something of a mixed bag. tracks like 'life in haven town' and 'into the fog' capture the isolation and desperation joe capelli must have felt as set out from oklahoma and trekked to new york, and for me are the scores standout moments. they're meloncholy and heartbreaking and a perfect compliment to those levels (the opening level and the mississippi river level). some of the other tracks don't fare quite as well, at least in my opinion. it's not that they're bad - not at all. they just feel serviceable and workman like instead of inspired. but that minor criticism shouldn't detract you from purchasing this soundtrack because there are more than enough tracks to merit the purchase.

lastly, i could be mistaken, but that soundtrack does feel complete. i remember playing through game thinking, 'wow, this music is great!' but i'm not hearing some of them on the soundtrack. i suppose a game with 7 hour campaign couldn't possibly fit all it's music on an 80-minute CD, but i do feel a little disappointed in that regard.

Boris Salchow isn't a huge name you hear in the music industry like Steve Jablonsky, Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard and the quickly-rising composer Ramin Djawadi, but he has truly brought a glorious masterpiece of a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi epic. Resistance 3 marks the supposed end to the main Resistance trilogy; Earth is invaded and overrun by an extra-terrestrial force known as the Chimera, and by the end of the trilogy, humanity is on the brink of extinction with just barely 10% of the human population left alive, or at least human. So when creating the atmosphere, setting and tone for Resistance 3, a different, darker score was needed to showcase a dark sci-fi tale about the emotional struggle for survival; Boris Salchow did just that, and more. Like Steve Jablonsky with Gears of War 3, Boris created a slow building, dark and emotional sound-scape with a few string cues that will bring tears to your eyes.

There are a few video game scores that truly can classify as great, epic and classic pieces of music (more and more every year), but give Resistance 3 time to settle, and it can- and should -be one of those soundtracks. A beautifully haunting score for a truly epic ending.
