Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Black takes a sharp turn away from Faeriewalker, her popular YA fantasy series, in this sequel to Replica (2013). The story of Nate Hayes, the Chairman Heir, and his betrothed, Nadia Lake, ramps up as the pervasive Orwellian elements layer over light romance. Nate, after discovering the reality behind his original death, feels like a wanted man under his father’s watchful eye, and Nadia has been spirited away to a private spa retreat while the news and paparazzi frenzy surrounding her arrest die down. Neither of them knows who to trust or how far they can go now that their previous crimes are national news. Their allies in the Resistance remain shifty by necessity, and everyone, even the heroes, is lying to keep safe. Black is an accomplished author, and her approach to sf and dystopian genres focuses on politics and trust rather than hard science. Readers should dive into Replica first, lest they become lost among the array of characters and frequently shifting, occluded alliances in Resistance. Grades 10-12. --Stacey Comfort

More About the Author

Jenna Black got her BA in physical anthropology and French from Duke University.

Once upon a time, she dreamed she would be the next Jane Goodall, camping in the bush making fabulous discoveries about primate behavior. Then, during her senior year at Duke, she did some actual research in the field and made this shocking discovery: primates spend something like 80% of their time doing such exciting things as sleeping and eating.

Concluding that this discovery was her life's work in the field of primatology, she then moved on to such varied pastimes as grooming dogs and writing technical documentation. She is now a full-time writer and lives in North Carolina with her husband and two dogs.

I loved this book! Very rarely is Book 2 in a series as good as the first one. I think I even liked this one a little better. It starts right where book 1 (Replica) left off and it is action from start to finish....I started the next book the moment I finished the last word. A lot happens and secrets are revealed! Nate and Nadia will have their hands full getting out of the surprise ending of this book. I can't wait to find out!!!!

Five out of five stars
In the sequel to REPLICA, Jenna Black drops us right where we left off. Nate and Nadia know that their small battle was nothing compared to the overall war they are waging with Nate’s father. They are also painfully aware of how precarious their current situation truly is. Nadia knows that she has to protect her sister, and Nate is desperate to protect not just Bishop but Nadia too. This sets the stage for the next thrilling installment of the series. Jenna once again leverages transitioning between Nadia and Nate’s point of view to create the suspense that makes it impossible to put the book down. The overall pace allows for character connection. There is also more focus on the relationships between the characters and character growth. Nadia and Nate are not the same people introduced in REPLICA. Throughout RESISTANCE both of them display how their experiences have changed them.

The best part of any second book is less world and character building and more story telling. That is exactly what Jenna does in this book. She does introduce new characters, but only in an effort to move the story long and help gain momentum throughout the book. There are predictable moments, but there are still surprises especially the end. It will leaving you begging for the third and final book.

Resistance picks up almost immediately where Replica left off. Nate and Nadia think they’ve stopped Nate’s father and the artificial intelligence he created from harming any more people. Sadly nothing is ever that simple. Now Nadia is sending her to a retreat out of embarrassment with no connection to the outside world. When Nate finds out Nadia has been put away and his father tells him he’ll be marrying someone else or else he’ll have his sexuality reprogramed. Now it’s up to him and Dante to help her.

Nate is a complete jerk in this book somewhat. I get why he was upset and it’s not completely out of character since he’s more or less a spoiled brat, but I also felt he grew a lot throughout this story. He gets engaged to a girl named Agnes who I guess is unattractive in a lot of ways. She’s shy and definitely an easy mark for him throughout the book. Nate ends up working with Dante a lot throughout the book and we get to see his boyfriend Kurt again. I definitely love the quips between the three boys in this story since they’re all so jaded and sarcastic.

Nadia is a surprisingly strong character, which is one of the main reasons I ended up liking Replica so much. I wouldn’t usually associate privileged and powerful with strong YA female leads, but Nadia has definitely had a hard go at it. Now she’s stuck in an institution and her life is becoming a downward spiral. Getting news of her broken engagement, her family, and about Nate’s dark secrets aren’t easy for her, but she comes out of this book stronger than ever.

I seriously enjoyed this book a whole lot. I’m nervous about ending this series since I hate endings, but I have a feeling it’ll be epic.

Restistance definitely upped the romance level up a notch.

TRIGGER WARNING: Threat of sexuality "reprogramming".

(Just a threat; it doesn't happen.)

Why is this novel's society advanced enough to create replicas of particular people, yet the Chairman's Heir's sexuality has to be kept secret? Supposedly because of the financial/political benefits of an arranged marriage, and then possible heirs, but I'm not entirely convinced.

Anyway, why did I wait so long to read this RESISTANCE? Possibly because Book 1, REPLICA, is worth five stars, and I worried this wouldn't have the same quality? I shouldn't have been concerned, because RESISTANCE is another five-star read in this amazing trilogy. Early on in the book I had a theory, and it turns out to be correct, but that didn't stop me loving the book, anyway.

And yes, plot convenience seems to trump realism when teens easily overpower their adult adversaries in physical combat, and get away with sneaking around on "sanctuary"/"retreat" grounds.

And Nate Hayes is SO BLOODY ANNOYING in this book, though his opinion later changes somewhat. Can I forgive him because he shows character development by novel's end? I won't entirely, because his thoughts and behaviour in regards to Agnes Belinski are absolutely appalling. The trilogy's world is rather classist, yet what bothers Executive teen Nate the most? Someone who's "not beautiful" (which is the nicest thing said about Agnes's appearance in this novel) and lacks social skills. Oh, but then Nate figures it's good Agnes is meek, because she'll just go along with whatever he says.

Not cool, Nate. Not cool.

By the end of the story, Nate comes to the conclusion that Agnes isn't so bad after all, compared to the novel's villains, but still...
