5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for Resistance and shooter fans alike!!!
I am a big fan of shooters and love my PSP, but have found very few decent portable games in this genre. This review is from: Resistance: Retribution (Video Game)
I am a big fan of shooters and love my PSP, but have found very few decent portable games in this genre. I took a chance on this game because it was produced by the same guys that made the "Syphon Filter" PSP games (If you are not familiar with them they are very well reviewed, wonderful games.) I am so glad that I did.

This game is fantastic. I will briefly list the pros and cons.

The Pros:

1) You can carry more than two weapons again. One of the things that made Resistance: The Fall of Man so good was the plethora of unique weapons always at your fingertips. Resistance: Retribution reintroduces this feature. The player is able to carry up to 12 weapons each with an alternate fire option giving you much creative freedom is solving the challenges that the levels through at you.

2) The controls are well thought out and easily customizable. They work very well in the default configuration

3) The story is easy to follow and compelling.

4) The graphics are cutting edge for a portable game. They are stunning and really have to be seen to be appreciated.

5) There are "Skill Points" and "Intel" documents to collect on each level which allow you to unlock new weapons and additional features. Re-playability is very high for this reason.

6) "Infected mode" is an added value for owners of Resistance 2.

7) The "infrastructure" multiplayer feature allows you to connect wirelessly (via the internet) with players all around the world for what is arguably the best multiplayer experience on any handheld to date.

8) Resistance: Retribution "Plus" mode allows you to use a PS3 controller for PSP.

9) The difficulty scales well. I have not been overly frustrated with any part of this game.

The Cons:

1) The only thing that I would like to see improved is that in "Plus" mode, you PSP is tethered to your PS3 through the USB cable. I don't know if it is technically possible to do it any other way, but it certainly limits the portability of your PSP.
Conclusion: At the end of the day, Resistance: Retribution will be remembered as one of the games that defined this generation of handheld games. Any fan of the Resistance series, or of this genre for that matter, would be remiss in not picking this one up. It is an absolute must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost flawless adaptation of the Resistance series on PSP, March 19, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resistance: Retribution (Video Game)
I picked up this game on release day 2 days ago. I'vd played the single player campaign, as well as the online muptiplayer, so i'll comment on both.

SINGLE PLAYER:
So far, the campaign as absolutely awesome! Story-wise, it takes place between Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. You play an ex-soldier came across his brother in a conversion center, and was forced to kill him before he converted to Chimera. All of this is explained to you in the Resistance: Fall of Man fashion. There is the same woman narrating (alot of people did not like how R2 scrapped this). The story is very well told to you, and really gets you involved.
GAMEPLAY/CONTROLS
Sony Bend did the best they could with the controls, especially for an over-the-shoulder 3rd person shooter. First, i absolutely love the aim-assist function. The PSP isn't the easiest system for aiming since it lacks a second joystick, so in Retribution you have a wide yellow box, any time an enemy is in the box it will automatically aim at them. (you can turn this off in the options to make it more difficult) Second, the cover system is actually pretty cool. Its a Gears of War style of taking cover minus having to hit a button every time: if you walk up to a wall you will automatically take cover, if you pull the trigger you pop out and start shooting, let go of the trigger and you go back into cover. As for guns, there are alot :) Lots of old ones from R1 and R2, as well as a couple new ones.
ONLINE:
This is one of, if not the best, games for online play on the PSP. It is Resistance: Fall of Man sized down for the PSP. You have death match, ffa, team death match, etc., with up to 8 players (4 on 4). You can chose ranked or non ranked matches as well.

Overall, this is probably one of the best games out for the PSP, both for single and multiplayer. Its about time a developer came out with something like this, nothing has been close since God of War. DEFINITELY worth 40 bucks. Go out and buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Resistance: Retribution, March 21, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resistance: Retribution (Video Game)
Resistance Retribution is a great game to come to the PSP. The graphics are almost as good as God of War Chains of Olympus except some character animations look a little blocky. The cutscenes look crisp and clear on the PSP's LCD screen. Even though there is one analog stick the controls are easy to use. There is an automatic lock-on when an enemy comes into view. Or you can manually aim which is a little tougher. Even though I've never played Resistance Fall of Man or Resistance 2 because I don't have a PS3, this game turned out really good and I would strongly recommend this to anyone. Its rated M for blood and gore, partial nudity, strong language, suggestive themes, and violence.

2.0 out of 5 stars High Hopes, Low Rating...., March 1, 2010
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resistance: Retribution (Video Game)
I've been a gamer now for about 18 years. I've played plenty of games on all types of platforms. I love my PSP as I can take my habit anywhere and get my fix. There have been many games put out for the PSP so far, some really good, and some horrible. Having finished Untold Legends - Brotherhood of The Blade, I was looking for another fun game, but something more current. On searching, I found two games, one of which was Resistance. I always thoroughly read all reviews to get a general feel for the game and what others think about it. I have to say, most got it wrong with this game.

On receiving the game, I read through the manual. I was disappointed straight out of the box. The first thing I look for when searching for a game is if the controls are PSP friendly, and that means, that character movement is completely controlled by the analog stick. Most reviews said that is how the character is controlled in this game. Wrong. On reading the manual, I find that only forward and side to side character control is afforded by the analog stick, and to turn the character you have to use the triangle, circle, square, X pads in conjunction with the analog stick. This was exactly what I wanted to avoid because games that are not modified from the two analog stick control format of the PS2 and PS3 suck on the PSP because you don't have enough fingers to both control the character AND select weapons, AND aim, AND fire at the same time. Proper control on land should be totally by analog stick.

I gave the game a run for its money. I'll be honest, the graphics and art work are excellent, and the story line is interesting. Sounds and music what little there is are very well done. But as one progresses through the levels it becomes increasingly difficult and then impossible to adequately control the character. This first becomes apparent when you try to swim the first time. You get an indicator to press down arrow to dive. OK, fine he goes under the water then what? You have to move the analog stick forward, but if you need to dive further, you have to press the down arrow again, hard to do when your using that hand to move forward. Turning is a joke as you attempt to use the Square and Circle buttons while pushing the analog stick. Down arrow will get you down under and diving, the up arrow button is all but useless as you die, lost and hopelessly disoriented as you've lost all sense of direction. Just to ice the cake they toss in a few Screachers later to attack you while you drown. Frustrating. The proper control set up for swimming should have been forward movement by analog stick and up, down, left, right by the symbol keys.

As you progress you naturally encounter more and more enimies. Most of the earlier enimies are fairly easy, and ammo seems plentiful. Eventually you'll cross paths with an enimie called a Boiler. These lovely creatures look like the aliens you saw in the movie Independence Day. They have thick skin though so you have to shoot them forever to kill them. That uses up all or most of your ammo. The idea is, you shoot them in the head and their head explodes killing them. If you fail to do this, they explode their head of their own accord next to you taking away health. Problem, you cannot maneuver and aim and shoot at the same time because your both hands are having to control the character. You get used to shooting at the same time by pressing the R button, but unless you aim with these guys, be prepared to get blown up. Whoops, cannot aim, using that hand to do two other things, sorry. BOOM! This is a recurring major problem that only gets worse as you play along farther into the game. More enimies, less control, more of you dying instead of them. Half the time your out of ammo, even if you pick most or all of it up that you come across, which is pretty easy to do. Health is usually fairly plentiful, but there are some areas they could have cut you a break and laid one in a corner. There are some campaigns where you don't have any health options, you have to beat the gazillions of enimies overwhelming you or you die first. Again frustrating.

Another poor design cue is with the weapons. There are plenty of weapons to use, and you get most of them in the beginning campaigns. Ammo is fairly plentiful, but because of control issues, you waste so much of it, you find yourself defenseless with useless empty weapons most of the time. A real problem is that each gun has different abilities, and dual capabilities. One for example is a regular gun in default mode, but acts as a grenade launcher in the other mode. The problem is, you have to aim the grenade and most of the time your needing to move while doing it. So that means your left hand is on the analog stick and your right hand is on the symbol keys, and they expect you to move, seek cover, and fire using your right button, but if you want to use the alternate weapon mode you have to press the left button, hold it then press the right button. So unless your a danged octopus, your not using the alternate weapons often. The other frustrating thing is, you eventually learn that for example the LAARK has some pretty good power. So you decide to select it, would you not think that a well designed game would display a tiny box or something with the gun name shown as your selecting weapons? Maybe the ability to press a button to refresh you memory as to what the selected weapon can do. Yes, you would expect that, but not in this game. Your on your own, all you get is a small icon, so unless you can recall in the heat of a battle while getting your butt blown off what the LAARK looked like, your SOL and DEAD.

In the end this game was nothing but a lesson in total frustration. I did not enjoy playing it at all. Every turn was a struggle to control the character and stay alive only to die because the controls flat out suc'd. Designers of games like this where they are too lazy to change the control functions to PSP friendly should be put out of a job, there is no excuse for that type of poor planning and design. I can fully understand now why this game in spite of all of the glowing reviews was marked down to $14.99, still $14 too high in my opinion. Do not waste your time or hard earned money on this turd, buy God Of War first, now that is an incredible game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Resistance... simply amazing., April 18, 2009

Best way to sum up Resistance: Retribution... simply amazing. It's my first Resistance game, but the gameplay is intense. Amazing graphics (PSP games should all be this good), great plot (really involves you), and very good controls (third person shooters, take a note!). I've only had the game a week, but have hardly been able to put it down. Definitely one of my favorite games now. My only issue is that there isn't a "save" option in the middle of a level which can get on your nerves if you're only able to play about 5mins or so. However, I'll overlook the save bit since I love the rest of the game. Even the unlockables are pretty fun. Finding intel definitely gives the game some replay value as well as the Infected and Plus modes. Overall, this game is a must have for anyone that enjoyed Resistance, third person shooters or just wants a fun action game. I give it 5 stars... I'd give it 6 stars if that was an option!

I wasn't expecting much from a PSP installment of the mega-popular Resistance franchise. Happily, I can say I was wrong. This game is a blast. Great graphics and gameplay (though the controls may be a little frustrating at the start), good advancement of the existing storyline. All the cool weapons and vehicles you've come to love are here and the enemy AI isn't bad for a portable system. I really enjoyed this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest games of any type I have ever owned., June 2, 2010

This review is from: Resistance: Retribution (Video Game)
I will start off by saying that I had never played Resistance before I got this game, I had never even seen gameplay. My friends raved about it and I figured I would take the risk and get it.
This is now my favorite game, it just has an excellent feel. The level design is very well done, and the AI is great. I never feel like I am really doing the same thing over again, each level is quite unique. There is a very good amount of weapons to choose from and each has its own very useful alternate ability. As for controls and movement, they are just fine, no complaints. The duck and cover system makes RS Vegas' look like garbage. This is a game that is very fluid, and the graphics are wonderful. It is very long too, I have been playing for a few days and I am not quite finished yet.
I kinda fell in love with this game, and I haven't even tapped into multiplayer.

I'm not much of a gamer but I like to play the PSP when I'm watching TV. I bought this game because of all of the reviews and without a doubt it was the best game I've ever played. It was real hard and took me forever to finish. It had a tons of levels and they were all challenging. It's a great game and it was totally worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just plain awesome; one of the best games on the PSP, April 27, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Resistance: Retribution (Video Game)
Sony's Resistance franchise is one of the best reasons to own a PS3, and when it was announced that it would be hitting the PSP in some form, saying there was some hesitation about it was saying it lightly. However, Resistance: Retribution for the PSP is a just plain awesome game that shows what the PSP can be capable of, and ends up being one of the best games available for Sony's maligned handheld. Playing as British soldier James Grayson, you take on the invading Chimera once again, this time using a third-person perspective. Regardless of the change in gameplay perspective, the fast and intense style of the series remains intact, and as fun as you'd expect as well. The game looks fantastic for a PSP game as well, and the single-player campaign is challenging, but the real meat and potatoes of Resistance: Retribution lies in its absolutely sick online multiplayer modes, which never stop entertaining. The game also features the ability to link up with Resistance 2 on the PS3, which allows you to "infect" your PSP to give James the abilities of Nathan Hale and more besides. The game's few flaws, namely its occasional shoddy voice work and getting used to its controls, are really nothing much to worry about, as the game winds up being a must play for PSP owners. All in all, Resistance: Retribution is just plain awesome, and is by and far one of the absolute best games to hit the PSP yet.

This is by far the greatest game out there for the PSP. It reminded of the joy I had the first computer game I ever played- Doom. It's just plain fun with a great background story and lots of things to kill. I played the whole game in Normal mode and while it's definitely hard in parts, and frustratingly difficult toward the end of the game, it can be completed which is always great. I was also pleasantly surprised with how long the game was- it just kept going and going. Truly a magnificent game.
