Book Description

When we see the word “revolution,” the shared imagination conjures up images of violent political upheaval. I use the word not to denote the bloody overthrow of a political order, but to describe a blossoming of understanding so profound that it leads to peaceful transformation of our social order, economy and culture.

It’s easy to confuse faith and political ideology. We resist changing our understanding,as we experience this transition as instability and insecurity. But changing our minds does not require changing our faith; rather, the firmness of our faith—in our Creator, in truth, in our ability to help others and prevail—is the bedrock that gives us the discipline and resolve to confront the brutally unwelcome facts of our circumstances and make coherent plans accordingly.

Though it may seem as if we have no power in the current state of affairs, the reality is that our participation and complicity enable the Status Quo’s pathologies and predation.

History is not fixed; it is in our hands. Revolutions spring not from history or abstract ideologies or street rebellions but from the transformed understanding of individuals. You cannot await a transition unfolding in a remote future or capitol to transform your life; that revolution begins in your internal understanding and reaches fruition in your coherently directed actions in the lived-in world.

I've read all three of CHM's books, and thoroughly enjoyed them all, but have to say that this one is the best so far. Smith does a brilliant job of explaining high-falutin and complicated concepts like social fractals in a simple way that makes you understand why corruption at the top in our elite classes (banking and political elites) inevitably cascades downward through the rest of society.

More importantly, Smith convincingly explains why our consumerist economy has created an epidemic of American sociopathology and profound unhappiness. It's all based on store bought identities and an advertising/marketing machine that constantly reinforces insecurity by telling you repeatedly that "you're not good enough" unless you buy the latest high-status gadget. And if you don't have the money? That's where the great Wall Street debt machine comes in. Cheap credit in the here and now ensures that the impulse purchase you want today will enslave and impoverish you in debt tomorrow.

Smith sees a way out though, and in this sense, it's a highly optimistic book. He calls for an end to the self-destructive debt-based consumerist market economy as the basis for our collective identities, and a return to non-market sources that the consumerist economy and Central State have eroded or marginalized: Family, community, cooking, reestablishing real social connections, the repudiation of abstractions like credit for every impulse purchase.

In conclusion, this is a book that will open your eyes to how you're continuously manipulated by your government and the finance class. It's likely to really piss you off, but ends on a high note of real hope and change.

SIMPLY EXCELLENT!
Charles' uncluttered insight into our national problems and state of affairs comes
across crystal clear in his book. He succinctly expresses and details what many of us already seem to know, but can't quite always put into words. I think that he did an excellent job distilling everything down into understandable chapters that were sufficiently long, but not too long. This is a "must read" for anyone who is
looking for clear, concise explanations about what has happened to America, who is
responsible and how to do something about it.
If it comes out in print I'm going to buy several copies to give to some of my friends who are still not convinced that we're about to go over a cliff.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most important author today May 1, 2012

I only heard the name Charles Hugh Smith a few weeks ago, felt left out that no one told me about his works.

I bought one, read at it, then bought every other book he wrote in Kindle edition. I'm not done with them at all. I think of myself as having an excellent vocabulary, but had to look up words that I've never heard or seen before. One central word is "entelechy" and if you don't know it well, spend some time getting the whole meaning including the Greek heritage.

Now that I've read only some of what I have ahead of me, I cherish the time I can read more.

Mr. Smith not only sees the truth about our massive over indebted world, but the solution, with which I heartily agree.

While I've not yet read, or studied, all of them, one concept stands clear.

I can't copy from a Kindle, wouldn't want to mislead you into thinking my words are what he said, but::: my words, "The looming catastrophe from our debt burden IS NOT something you can ignore. By ignoring it, you are complicit in its arrival. AT LEAST you can show your disagreement. Even if you can't convince enough others to change the world, YOUR OWN CHANGE frees you in a way that is fundamentally life saving FOR YOU."

Remember, my words, not his, but that's the idea.

I have "friends" even "family" who act like, talk like, things are getting better.

In this case, the sky IS falling. It is only a matter of when and who suffers first or most, IF IF each person in his daily life decisions does not choose for the moral choice, the honest truth.

While my past still has my favorite authors, today Mr. Smith is THE man to read, study and heed.
