Book Description

Hayek spoke of nations travelling a road to serfdom: This book points to the only real exit ramp.
If you're like most Evangelicals, you've been taught that Romans 13:1-7 gives you, the Christian citizen, a blanket duty to "render unto Caesar" an unqualified obedience. Modern teachings on the sticky relationship between God and government, church and state, seem to be little more than restatements of what any dictator would want you to believe. It hasn't always been that way within Christianity.
Does even an antichrist government have a right to command your meticulous fidelity? Did you sin against God when you broke the speed limit? Or is it possible that Thomas Jefferson got it right when he said, "Resistance to Tyrants is Obedience to God?"
American society is sliding into political ideologies like socialism and raw democracy. The Bill of Rights is under assault, both in the court of public opinion, and through nightmarish government maneuvers like domestic drones, NDAA indefinite detention, a Presidential "kill list," ever-increasing assaults on Second Amendment rights through gun control, and attacks on religious liberty inherent in Obamacare.
It's more important than ever that those who claim to be sent into the world as salt and light have a solid foundation in Scripture. And, let's be honest, the over-reaching big government bullies, the would-be icons of Orwell's Big Brother, could have no greater friends among the citizenry than supposedly Bible-believing pastors who urge their flocks to comply, and submit, and stand for nothing. But, thankfully, there is always a remnant that has not yet bowed the knee.
In this 79 page book, Christian pastor, author, and patriot, Gordan Runyan brings his conversational, often humorous style and characteristic clarity to bear on these issues. The reader will feel both challenged and encouraged to stand up for true liberty.
The first section of the book is a close examination of the controversial text of Romans 13:1-7, which many have used to teach unconditional obedience to tyrants and despots. Is that what it really says? This commentary on Romans may surprise you.
In the next section, common objections to the concept of resisting wicked government are answered. (e.g. Shouldn't we give Caesar what is Caesar's? Shouldn't Christians avoid entanglement in politics?)
Finally, "Resistance to Tyrants: Romans 13 and the Christian Duty to Oppose Wicked Rulers" concludes that Christian resistance ought to be recognizably Christian in nature. Not bloodthirsty, or vicious, etc. He gives some suggestions for Christians who want to fight wicked government in the here-and-now, which a lot of Romans 13 commentaries are content to avoid discussing. This book is a joyful volley against the walls of the God-hating establishment, from Happy Siege. Arm yourself with the truth of the Word of God. Join the Resistance.

Editorial Reviews

"Resistance to Tyrants” is the kind of book that would be easy to dismiss if it had been written by a wild eyed novice who is unprepared to undertake a work like this and depends on his own limited thinking and not the ministry of the Spirit in the Word of God.

Thankfully, that is not the case with Gordan Runyan, whom I have known over many years of shared ministry and deep friendship. It has been my honor to be his pastor and mentor.

Some things about Gordan are obvious from his writings and you will see them right away. You will see his powerful gift as a communicator and the fruits of his scholarly labor, as one who has been extraordinarily diligent in his research.

What you won't necessarily see is that Gordan Runyan is one of the most level-headed, calm, patient Christian thinkers around today, whose name will surely become more prominent as time goes by.

He is the genuine article, as they say, both from the pulpit and outside of it, in daily life. I can’t recommend his work strongly enough.

Rev. E. Peter Denlea, LCDR, US Navy (Ret.)

From the Author

It is hardly a new observation to note that the church of Jesus Christ can be influenced in its thinking by the surrounding culture. In America, one aspect of this influence has clearly been this: Christians agree with the culture that politics and government are secular institutions. Moreover, we are often told, it is right and good for these things to remain sealed off from religious thought. The Lord's church will prevail against the gates of hell itself, but apparently we're not even supposed to knock on the door of the capitol. Kuyper once said that when it comes to the earth and all it contains, there is not one square inch of it that Jesus has failed to claim as his own. But American Christians have been taught to think the Lord is just fine with Satan owning everything having to do with civil government. This is not the teaching of either Testament of the Bible. Resistance to Tyrants aims to prove that (and, frankly, it's not a difficult case to make.)

It is time for the church to RISE UP and Righteously resist the corrupt governmental Tyranny running rampant in America today! It is more than well past time for us to stand up as a Christian People and at least try to take back our once great country from the clutches of our enemy the devil and his willing political servants. But wait, aren't we as followers of Christ supposed to blindly and unconditionally submit to all authority just the way it says to do in Romans 13? That is my Pastor's view and while I respect his opinions as my mentor, friend, and Pastor this supposed biblical directive never sat well with me so it was time to start reading the word and doing my research into this troubling doctrine of many modern churches. After some good finds and more than a few commentaries that simply echo the party line of "Don't think ..just OBEY!" I found this OUTSTANDING book by Gordan Runyan!! This book is very clearly the definitive work on how we as Christians should really look at how to apply the lessons in Romans 13 to our actual daily lives in a way that flies in the face of conventional church dogma but is completely in line with the expectations and Character of our Graceful GOD.Gordan makes his points clearly and concisely with plenty of scriptural support and references. He demystifies how we should interpret and apply righteous resistance and disobedience to ANY corrupt authority! This book helped validate the things that GOD was revealing to me in my spirit in such a bold way that I know know without a doubt that I have read and interpreted what GOD showed me in his word properly! What a wonderful affirmation it is to know that we can resist and that in fact it is out DUTY to resist all such tyranny in what ever form we might run into it in. Christians have failed their country in recent elections. Our failure is not a moral failure as much as it is a doctrinal failure.

We have allowed the world system around us to 'press us into their mold' in spite of the clear mandate in Romans 12:2 telling us otherwise. The mandate in Romans 12:2 is to resist conformity to the wishes of the world system around us. Opinion manipulators in charge of winning elections have been playing the Christian vote like a fiddle. It is time to stop our sinning against the morality and justice of God by understanding what form human government must take in order for fallen men to live in freedom and tranquility with each other. There is renewal available for the people of God. Romans 12:2 tells us that we are to 'be transformed by the renewal of our minds.'

God's Spirit has a design for Romans 12:2 and Romans 13:2. They both belong in the same Book. If these two verses seem to be dissonant in your mind it is because you probably do not understand them. Pastor Gordon will bring focus and clarity to your view of both of these verses and your relevancy to current culture will be transformed.

5.0 out of 5 stars essential for believers in an unfriendly world November 20, 2012

I was wondering how to conduct myself in the aftermath of the last Presidential election. The party in power has beliefs that I can't live with. The B iblical teaching that God has placed government in power really had me concerned as I tried to blend that fact with my understanding of other Bblical truth. How could I follow Jesus and this government? This book gave me a clear path to follow and a better understanding of the fact that government is from God. Prayer is still a necessary ingredient, but there is a way to stay true to Jesus and survive today's world, in so far as God wants me to.
I got Resistance To Tyrants: Romans 13 and the Christian Duty to Oppose Wicked Rulers on my IPAD and Kindle from and carry one or the other with me all the time. I am on my second reading and get something more every time I open it.

Gordon Runyan's work is desperately needed in our time. "Resistance to Tyrants: Romans 13 and the Christian Duty to Oppose Wicked Rulers" largely debunks erroneous teaching. This book largely echoes Romans 13: The True Meaning of Submission, 2nd Ed. by Timothy and Chuck Baldwin.

Let me first start out with an observation. I find it utterly incomprehensible that the "obedience absolutists" suffer a complete mental lapse and fail to consider the fact that the Apostle Paul wrote the 13 Chapter of Book of Romans from a jail cell after he ran afoul of civil rulers. I think the internet term for this is... WTF?!

Besides all that, I think that more should be written to emphasize the Christian DUTY to resist tyranny than defending "disobedience".

God made man in His image and gave him dominion over the rest of creation. For the Christian to countenance subjugation by ungodly tyrants, much less defend it with pious sophistry, is a denial of the faith and an abomination.

Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

"Be fruitful, and multiply" is not a literary parallelism. It says in essence "Be industrious and bring forth heirs that are also industrious." Mankind in to faithfully bear God's image in Creation. As such Man is to model both self control and sovereignty, responsibility and liberty.
