Book Description

More than a century ago the world was devastated, but that doesn't matter.  Nobody cares about the past, stories from that time are as wildly conflicting as they are ridiculous--when any stories exist at all.  There are problems in the here and now that need to be dealt with, bringing the past into things isn't going to help anyone.

The fact is that young people all over the world are developing mysterious powers, and the public reactions to these powers are far from positive.  Fair enough, you might say.  Who wants a young man around who can conjure heat from the palm of his hand?  How deeply undesirable is a girl who can bend your emotions to her will?  What use, I ask you, is a girl whose very essence crackles with lightning?  No use at all, I'd say.

As for this so-called 'Mr Fin' and his grand ideals, well, all I can say is that his clothing is of better quality than his plans.  Vague allusions to a 'sanctuary' and a 'mysterious and powerful statue' are all very well, but when it comes to solid results I fear you may find him somewhat lacking.  Mark my words and mark them well, following one such as him will only lead to tears.

All in all, I'd say there's not much you could reasonably expect from a world such as this.  Conflict, perhaps.  Hardship, certainly.  Despair, heartache, loss ...

... hope?

No, don't be ridiculous.  Where could one find hope, in this ruin of an existence?

Honestly, I am asking.  Where?

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising. Original. Engaging. October 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
We've seen the meme of the empowered adolescent girl before, but we've seen underdog stories and road stories before, too.

After you get to the expected conventions, nothing is what you expect.

One, because the world of this story sucks. There's an Inquisition going on, children are treated poorly when they're noticed at all, and the economy, where present, is in sorry shape.

So you read this book hunting for glimmers of kindness, and you find them. They're deeply embedded in the relationships. So, as a reader I grasped onto them and let them take me, heart and soul. As the story got more dire, with these young women and their mentor struggling for a better life, the kindnesses and sweetness got even more poignant.

I had a really hard time putting this book down after a while. Yes, the structure of the first third was off-putting. But there are payoffs, because you learn how each girl was raised, and how their new powers are part of their past lives, so that when we get to the end, and Ashley runs far from her sister to protect her, and Lina heals and hurts with her powers, and Maya builds confidence, we know why it's important.

This is an outstanding book. Surprising and original and heartfelt. Read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read April 7, 2011
By Koala
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Birds of Passage is one of the most unusual books I've ever read. It starts off with a series of `vignettes' introducing a quite daunting number of characters, all with one common thread. Normally, I might have seen this vast array of characters and put the book down as `too confusing'. But it was never confusing, simply because each and every character is carefully and uniquely drawn so that they stay individuals, easy to distinguish throughout the book.

The threads of the vignettes are then drawn together into one story, a story that twists and turns and grows ever more exciting. Under the watchful eye of Fin, the young characters come together to a common purpose, to find a statue lost by Fin long ago. Or is that the real purpose? Fin is kept tantalisingly mysterious, so that the reader is never really sure what it is that he's aiming for. Meanwhile others with similar powers are also being gathered by another, their motives more sinister.

I can't say I `liked' the ending, but I did like the fact that the temptation to let the `goodies' win and the `baddies' lose wasn't taken. It's an ending that leaves the reader thinking and in my case, very much looking forward to the sequel.

While the premise of the book - people with super powers being drawn together for whatever purpose - may not be entirely original, the execution of it in Birds of Passage is creative. It's well written, interesting, and thought-provoking. All in all, a very good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Birds of Passage (Resonance Book One) May 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Perhaps the cat got the pigeon, but unfortunately, Resonance Book one failed to hold my attention.

The entire first third of the book is made up of a series of short introductory stories or vignettes, meant to bring to life the seemingly vast array of characters that populate White's world in Birds of Passage. However, an over-reliance on dialogue to carry the narrative forward doesn't help the reader to engage with the characters and after a while they all start to feel a little too similar. While their 'powers' might be individual, their plight is not, and then the repetition becomes apparent in the text, as several of the chapters end with the exact same words. While I'm certain this was deliberate, it just doesn't work as a hook for me.

This was given to me as a review copy, and I gave the book several chances to capture my attention and make me want to read to the end. Ultimately, I just couldn't get involved enough and had to put the book down. I may, or may not come back to it at a later date.

More About the Author

Oh, hello! I'm Ben, Benjamin Joseph Kuniyoshi White if you're not into the whole brevity thing, BJK White if you're somewhere in the middle. I'm sometimes an author person. Most of my books would fall under the umbrella of 'Girls Kicking Arse', and probably if you had to choose a section of the library to put them in, Young Adult would be the safest bet.

To get specific, I'm the leastselling author of the Miya Black, Pirate Princess series, as well as the superhero diary of Charlotte Powers, the zombie-infested unlife of Imogen Shroud, the slightly depressing world of Resonance, and a whimsical little book called The Boy & Little Witch.

I live in Nelson, New Zealand with my super-wife and two busy young daughters, and sometimes I get time to write a bit.
