Useful anthology on Mississippi gambling,
By Brad Rice "retired historian" (Hampton, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Resorting to Casinos: The Mississippi Gambling Industry (Hardcover)
This is the best overview available of the rise of gambling in Mississippi. Unfortunately, it suffers from the fact that all of the essays except for a very brief epilogue were written prior to Hurricane Katrina's devastating impact on Biloxi's casinos in August 2005. Some of the essays are burdened with too much academic pretentiousness, but the political science entry about how casino advocates slipped the enabling legislation through under the radar is very well done. Bottom line -- not a fun read, but full of good information.
