Book Description

March 12, 2001

Real-time systems and networks are of increasing importance in many applications, including automated factories, telecommunication systems, defense systems, and space systems. This book introduces the concepts and state-of-the-art research developments of resource management in real-time systems and networks. Unlike other texts in the field, it covers the entire spectrum of issues in resource management, including task scheduling in uniprocessor real-time systems; task scheduling, fault-tolerant task scheduling, and resource reclaiming in multiprocessor real-time systems; conventional task scheduling and object-based task scheduling in distributed real-time systems; message scheduling; QoS routing; dependable communication; multicast communication; and medium access protocols in real-time networks. It provides algorithmic treatments for all of the issues addressed, highlighting the intuition behind each algorithm and giving examples. The book also includes two chapters of case studies.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too dry to read, September 6, 2007
This review is from: Resource Management in Real-Time Systems and Networks (Hardcover)
This book is more of a manual than the traditional concept of a book. No real life examples of the subject discussed. No easy or hard exercises to enforce the material the student went over.
All you see is a collection of abstract concepts to a subject that can be very interesting. This is definitely not worth the amount of money I spent.

3.0 out of 5 stars Diverse rather than comprehensive, August 11, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Resource Management in Real-Time Systems and Networks (Hardcover)
When you start reading, you will find the authors have used too much space in this book to introduce the papers they published. They describe their own papers in such details such that even performance evaluations are included! On the other hand, the architecture of the book is rather incomplete possibly because the author want to cover too many areas: multiprocessor, distributed system (including Object-Oriented) and networking. The content in each part is not comprehensive enough, either. The works of other peoples are not presented in detail or analyzed.

However, to be fair, this book does address some issues not present in other books, including objected-oriented distributed systems, detailed scheduling in real-time communications and two case studies, which I like.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book that covers all about RT Systems and N/Ws, August 10, 2001
This review is from: Resource Management in Real-Time Systems and Networks (Hardcover)
The book covers an amazing amount of literature right from task scheduling, resource management to real-time communication.

Its introduction to Real-Time Computing itself speaks for it, giving an overall view of a real-time system and clarifies the common misconceptions about real-time systems.

The book is clearly divided into two subdivisions: one covering the resource management in real-time systems (covering process scheduling, resource reclaiming, object-based RT systems) and the other section covering resource management in real-time networks. The depth of information covered in Real-Time Networks can be rarely found in anyother Real-Time book.

The book covers all the relevant literature in the respective fields (from basic to the recent publications), thus can serve as a great reference book for Real-Time Systems.

If you're a beginner in Real-Time Systems, it is a great book to start with, if you're an expert it can be a great reference tool.

As a student doing research in Real-Time Systems, I recommend this book for everyone interested in learning Real-Time Systems.
