Grass Houses Bamboos are taller than many trees, but they are not trees. They are actually giant grasses with hollow, woody stems. Often called canes, these stems have many uses. Forest-dwelling people build their houses entirely of bamboo, and elsewhere in the tropics the sturdy stems are used as scaffolding. The poles are much lighter than steel but nearly as strong. They are also used for building bridges and as water pipes. Homes in many parts of the world also have furniture made from bamboo. Over 1,000 different products are obtained from the various kinds of bamboo. --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.
