~ When Jimmy Smith moved from Blue Note to Verve in the 1960's the nature of his recordings changed in several ways. One way they changed is that he was often backed by a big band; another way they changed is that he was often asked to record jazz versions of currently popular songs. The two albums combined on this CD clearly demonstrate both of these points. Regardless of the material and regardless of the setting, Jimmy Smith was still Jimmy Smith = funky, blues-drenched, soulful. If one is old enough to remember these songs as popular music hits, then you may think of this as "Jimmy plays pop". However, if you are younger than that or simply ignore the association to their pop-music origins, then you will appreciate these recordings for what they are = funky Jimmy Smith.

~ "Respect", recorded 2 & 14 June 1967, features a funky Smith digging into Joe Zawinul's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" made famous by Cannonball Adderley; Otis Redding's "Respect"; "Funky Broadway" made popular by Wilson Pickett; Allen Toussaint's medium-tempo blues "Get Out of My Life" (which reminds me of "Got My Mojo Workin'"); Jimmy's own up-tempo blues "T-Bone Steak"; plus the bonus track of Jimmy singing the Mickey Mouse Club theme.
~ "Respect" was recorded with Jimmy fronting two groups: one consisting of Eric Gale (guitar), Ron Carter (bass), and Grady Tate (drums); the other consisting of Thornel Schwartz (guitar), Bob Bushnell (bass), Bernard Purdy (drums). The liner notes do not distinguish which group plays on which tracks. I am no expert on bass or drums; however, based on the sound and style of the guitar and based on the master numbers, I guess that the Schwartz-Bushnell-Purdy "Mercy" and "Funky Broadway", with the other tracks featuring the Gale-Carter-Tate group.

Great funk jazz organ playing by Jimmy Smith. Found him serendipitously, but will add his music to my regular rotation. Pee Wee Ellis, Miles Davis, Beastie Boys. . .

Its a pleasure to have collected limited edition of jimmy smith cd. The first time i attended jimmy smith live show was early 2000 in Moretele Park Jazz festival in Mamelodi, Pretoria. How old he was but was just kept us dancing with his old music as if its new. I'm sharing this cd with my kids and already show interest in jazz and its pleasure to enjoy cd with friends and share good old memories!!
