member of his African nation who is captured and brought to England on a slave ship sold into slavery and is purchased by a trader, Josiah Cole Josiah Cole, an ordinary trader has ambitions of rising above his station in Bristol's aristocratic society. He marries Frances Scott, a penniless aristocrat and through her sees himself becoming a man of importance.

A Respectable Trade is the fascinating look into the intimate lives of these three, woven into a tale of success, failure and the heartbreak of a doomed love affair.
